Headboard or Complete bed frame (head and foot board)?

Recently I have decided to change the Master Bedroom; one of the things I can not decide on is whether to have JUST a head board or purchase a complete bed frame including head and foot boards. To me, just a headboard is something you see in hotels (I know, I know) probably because I grew up with "traditional" beds. The other reason (and this is the one that bugs me the most) is blankets, duvet, comforters, etc slide off the bed while you sleep.

The room has high ceilings but is not a large room overall. A headboard would look nice but....more and more don't have the ability to attache the mattress frame to it so I suppose it just rests up against the wall.

In any event.....which do you prefer and why? Guess I'm looking for design feedback, lol, in support of one or the other. TIA!

I think a bedroom doesn't look complete without a headboard.

Personally, I don't like to have a footboard because I would feel confined by having something at the edge of the bed.

We have an upholstered bed frame with attached headboard. Usually, you attach the headboard to the bed frame. I wouldn't just leave it resting against the wall.

@Bri36 That was what I thought about headboards (you attach them) but the few I've looked at over the past few months do NOT attach to anything. I don't get it.

I like the look of head and foot boards. I have a poster bed, I guess I just like the look. But now a days, anything goes.

I personally like having a headboard and a foot board. Now I do like the footboard to be low. It will still keep the bedding from sliding off but it also lets the headboard be the showcase and allows for the room to still look large.

I don't get it either.

I haven't looked at headboards lately, but I can't imagine not attaching them to the bed frame.

For me, a footboard would get in my way when changing sheets and making up the bed, having to tuck everything down and under the mattress. I just like a headboard and bedframe which attaches. I must admit, I have always loved a sleigh bed, however, I know I would hate to have to deal with it. My headboard which was purchased 45 years ago when we got married, and I still love it, does attach to the metal frame. I wouldn't want it otherwise.

@cookie16 My youngest sleeps in an antique sleigh bed and they are beautiful. : ) I have to say it's not that difficult changing sheets, however. It's easier because you don't have a dust ruffle and you just tuck everything in one swoosh of the arm. Things don't come untucked because of the way the bed is shaped.

I like a headboard & footboard. I fold down the comforter & put on the footboard every night. I don't want to fold it up & throw in the floor every night. We don't use it for a cover for warmth when we sleep like I guess a lot of peope do.

Mine also has siderails so I don't use a dust ruffle. I have never liked those & see why they call them DUST ruffles. LOL!!!

After many years of a head board only and dust ruffle around the bed frame, two years ago I purchased a new bedroom set with headboard and footboard and they are both attached to the bed itself. I love it. If the mattress is positioned correctly, you have enough room to tuck in the bedding. I love not having to deal with a dust ruffle. My set is a Vaughn Bassett.

I have a bench at the end of the bed. I fold down the comforter onto the bench.

I like it either way. I only have a headboard. I wouldn't buy a headboard that didn't attach to the frame though. I wouldn't like that at all. I've never seen one like that.

I have a kingsize bed with a beautiful rich chocolate leather headboard. I just love it. It doesn't attach to the bedframe and it never moves. I don't like cloth headboards as I think they are dust collectors. LM

I agree! My mother had one like that in the guest room and every time you turned over it bumped and rattled. You don't have to have a footboard that is tall with a bed frame. They make bedframes with an attached rail and a platform but no footboard.

I would never have just a headboard attached to one of those flimsy bed frames--those metal ones.

We have a king size bed. We bought a base from Amazon that doesn't need a boxspring just the mattress. We bought a headboard also from Amazon and a bracket that we thought we could attach to the base. But it didn't work SO we just have the headboard (which is heavy) up against the wall and the bed against it and no problems whatsoever. Works for us with it not being attached.

As someone else said I don't like a footboard because sometimes I scooch down on the bed and my feet are at the edge! I would feel confined with a footboard.

My headboard has been resting against the wall for many years now. It's made for a double bed. When I switched to a Queen size bed, I didn't want to get rid of the headboard, so my bed is just up against the headboard without any problem. I don't have a footboard, but I don't have any problems with the bedding falling off either.

My home is minimalistic. My mattress sits on a platform, not on a traditional box spring on a frame with legs. There is no headboard. The platform extends about eight inches from the mattress on all sides.

Look at the area where the headboard should be attaching to your frame and if it's wood, you're likely expected to drill it and bolt it yourself.

I talked to the Amish builder who built my bedroom furniture about a headboard to complete the look. He said because of the differences in bed frames he doesn't pre drill the headboard alone. He expects the customer to drill and bolt the headboard to the frame.
