She did go ahead and ordered the pendants. Overstock had a price that couldn't be beat. The island granite is thunder white. It is white with gray swirls. It has specks of burgundy in it. It's pretty light. Hopefully everything will look good. She ended up switching to the gunmetal hardware.

I am trying to help my mom work through finishes for lighting before they start buying them. Is it ok to mix finishes? For instance the chandelier and the kitchen hardware are oil rubbed bronze. The island pendants are matte black. Would this look ok with the oil rubbed bronze. Here is a picture of the three.

I think the bronze and the black look very fine together, in the same room. Have that look of wrought iron or blacksmithed metal. It’s not colors that have to match so much as fitting a look together without conflicts in period or theme. So brushed nickel or stainless might look pretty weird (and way too modern) with any of the matte black or bronze of the fixtures in your pictures, but the bronze and black modes you showed together in your fotos look rather appealing and consistent. You’re doing a fine job. Have confidence in your vision. Lookin’ good.

She showed my sister tonight and she thought they should be the same. So my mom was getting really confused because she really likes the pendents and nook light. She has to change the kitchen hardware to oil rubbed bronze because she accidently picked Carmel bronze. I think with the white cabinets the oil rubbed and black will pop. The island is a dark expresso stain.

This is my honest opinion. As for me, I want to pick what I like in a house and furnishings. After all, I'm the one living there, right? When I choose anything for my home I never ask for other's opinions. Pick what you love. My sister is in the building process. She won't make any decisions unless a certain friend of hers gives the o.k. If you get too many opinions the decisions get cloudy and may not reflect your likes. I think homes should be individual and personal. When I shop for my home the only thing that matters is if me and my husband like it, whether it matches or not. My sister's entire home choices have been made by her friend. If it works for her, good. I guess I'm at an age where I just don't care what others think about my home. I am really am enjoying all of the pictures you are sharing. I'm excited for you. A brand new house is an exciting event.

As long as your family likes it, the finishes shouldn't matter. Some people build a house with the idea that they need to please the next buyer.

It's just you don't want something to look dumb. It's a lot of money to spend and not like the outcome. They had to go and make some changes at the cabinet place today. She is thinking of changing the hardware to gunmetal. The guy is going to call the decorator at the builder to make sure it will go ok. I think it will look great with the black pendants. She loves the pendants. So she is going to get them and then the chandelier at menards. If it doesn't look right she will return the chandelier and look for a black one.

My moms worst fear with this house is a huge mistake. Because you are picking from a sample and putting everything together. Until it's all done your kind of just guessing what it will look like. Imagine building a brand new home and walking in and it looks hideous. Your then stuck with it.

The cabinet guy called back and he talked to the decorator at the builder. She said gunmetal kitchen hardware will look awesome. Especially with the black pendants. So now my mom will be on the search for a black chandelier instead of oil rubbed bronze.

Sorry, but I think you're worrying too much.

I personally just re-did my kitchen earlier this year. I have ivory (which I painted) cabinets, rubbed bronze hardware, dark formica (black, brown, cream) countertops, ivory granite sink, chrome faucet, walnut colored flooring with black kick-plate, and dark rubbed bronze lighting, almost black.

I have oak crown trim on top of the cabinets and black accent shelves on the wall and side of the upper cabinet near the window, oak spice rack, oak towel rack and oak topped cream dresser (use for my toaster oven/utensils in drawers) ... also oak accents throughout the room.

My window and pantry door are white with white trim and in the whole room (open concept)...white subway tile for backsplash and white appliances...

I guess it sounds like nothing matches, but everything coordinates and I LOVE it ... it looks homey, not sterile.....somewhat cottage style...like my aunt had at her cottage at the lake.

I wanted something mainly functional (had my whole kitchen re-arranged. electrical and plumbing also) and non-formal where we could spend time cooking, visiting and not have to worry about somebody making a mess or having to take off their shoes....

If you don't like something, who says you can't change it eventually? ...

I , personally, have no problem with that...been there, done that...

Your house is going to be beautiful. You and your folks have great taste. I visited my sisters house that is nearly complete. She was worried about her choices too. The house looks amazing. She is relieved. The thing is, if you decide you hate a light fixture or drawer hardware, you change it. It might cost a few dollars but it's an easy remedy. Don't doubt and fret over your decisions. It's gonna be o.k. Go with what you like!
