Recessed Lighting In A Hallway?

I saw the idea somewhere, using recessed lighting in a hallway that leads to bedrooms.

Pretty ingenious idea when you think of cleaning/dusting ceiling fixtures and moving furniture/mattresses and being cautious not to break globes, etc.

Other than they may look like a airport runway...I was considering replacing the cheap looking fixtures with 3 recessed lights...any thoughts?

I love them .. up out of the way ... there but not there if you know what

I mean ....and you could always add a dimmer switch ...if you wanted

lower lights at times.....

Snowpuppy....that's exactly what we want to do. We just moved into a new house last summer. The previous owners put globe like flush mount lighting where all the recessed lighting was. It's on our main floor and upstairs where the bedrooms are. I think I have 9 or 10. I much prefer the recessed lighting. I think it looks better, cleaner lines.

I think it's an excellent idea. I love them and love the idea of having them in a hallway. They don't have to be "in a line" like an airport runway, you could alternate one side to the other down the length.... or group a couple together (just thinking out loud)...

I absolutely love love recessed lights - if I could afford - I've have them everywhere - on the stairs - kitchen - bathroom and even the garage. I have in the family room but that's it. Go for it.

I love it. It looks clean modern. I would definitely put them on a dimmer switch

I really like the square ones a couple posts up. I have recessed lighting in a couple areas. Two short halls leading to the bedrooms, kitchen around the sink and bottom of cellar stairs.

Thank you for the comments ! Tho my home is less than 10 yrs old, it's done in Builder's Cheap and those globes have got to go!

In staggering the lighting I also thought of placing one light outside each bedroom/bathroom door. I don't want huge, glaring lights but a soft glow that would add some nightime safety.

The dimmer suggestion is great! Also, the suggestion to eventually replace the bare bulb lighting on the basement steps is fantastic.

@Snowpuppy I want to do the exact same thing in the hall, kitchen and something to brighten my dark living room!! I was wondering if this is done by a general contractor or an electrician. I just hope it will not be to expensive.

I've never seen lighting like this in the lower portion of the wall. It's interesting though.

I think you still need light from the ceiling.

I don't think the cannisters/lightbulbs are pricey as they're a stock item at HD or Lowe's. Wiring those baseboard lights would be pricey.

The expense would be an electrician running the wiring thru the ceiling/crawlspace or attic. If you have hallway lighting, the basic wiring should be in place. Adding dimmer switches shouldn't be pricey if they are replacing a current or toggle switch.

Some of the new lightbulbs are not 'dimmable'. Knowing where and what you want to place first will save you and the electrician time and money. Don't forget you'll have to patch/repaint the ceiling when done. If you can DIY this it will save you $

Have/ had recessed lighting in the upstairs hallways in my past (newly built) and present (1970) homes. One hallway was very long, the other rather short.

Can't imagine anything else.

That's a great image of what a clean look you'll have. They used the existing wiring/placement so that was a great budget friendly update.

I agree with the ease of moving things, without worrying about fixtures above you.

But just my personal take on recessed lighting (have some in my rec room) is that it still gets dirty up inside and needs cleaned.

For me, I don't like the look. It is too modern for my tastes, and I just don't care for it.

If you are doing a sleek and modern look in decor, then I guess it doesn't stand out, but it's just a personal preference for me to have more traditional fixtures.

Yeah, my house is done in Builder's Cheap too. Hollow core doors, those globe light fixtures, single pane windows. It's not a bad house and we maintain it, but there are no special features.
