Home Decorating -- Two Styles

We moved to newer patio home after 24 years in single-family home where we raised our children. Gave our furniture away and started over with decor. My style is mainly polished casual while husband prefers modern farmhouse. It's been fun collaborating with both styles. Do you have similar experiences blending home decor styles?

I have spent (and still do) much time with blending home decor styles because I've never really been able to go out and purchase everything to do a whole house (or even a whole room) at one time.

I started out with a few basic pieces when I left home, and slowly over the decades added things. My tastes might change or refine a bit over the decades, and it resulted in a kind of mixed bag of things that became 'home'.

I also like several styles of decor, so my family room is quite different than my living room which is quite different from my master bedroom. Having different styles in different rooms allows me to have fun and enjoy searching out different kinds of decor that interest me.

My husband has no interest in participating in the choosing of home decor, so I really get to do what I want. I sometimes wish he did like it, but I might regret what his input would bring!! LOL

@jeanlake....husband and I have similar taste, antiques and comfy furniture, nothing stuffy....one question, I am from the midwest and never heard the term 'patio' home, what is that?

@Mominohio I wish my husband would back off a little from decorating, but it's nice to have him involved. Basically, we compromise, but he likes a 'heavier' and darker look than I do. I'm loving eclectic more and more.

@spud188 Modern farmhouse is fun to me, if it isn't too vintage or dark. I like clean lines and simplicity. Sometimes a bit whimsical. A lot of mixed metals in modern farmhouse. Polished casual is considered a modern, simplified version of traditional. Lighter than farmhouse. IMO

Patio home definition for mom to dogs -- While the meaning of the term patio home varies by location, it usually indicates a single-story home, having one or more common walls with neighboring homes, a patio and a common back yard. These homes are popular with seniors as the homeowner's association is responsible for outdoor maintenance.

I have the opposite experience, in terms of size. I went from a 1400 square foot single story ranch to almost 7500 square foot three level home last year. Since May we've been remodeling bathrooms. Started with master, then the 2nd bedroom/bathroom next to it and now getting ready to start the last bathroom upstairs, a jack and jill. All the bedrooms in this house has it's own bathroom. I always thought I was traditional if I was going to be labeled as to my style, sometimes almost country. And I'm surprised at how an opposite direction I took with the bathrooms. Technically it's called transitional. The second bathroom I actually went a little modern with large white subway tile with multy colored gray accent, gray tile floor, white shaker cabinets and gray/white carrera marble vanity, and chrome fixures. My husband and I have completely opposite style in every way. He would be happy if everything was tan, blue or brown. But he pretty much let me on my own and so I made the decisions. I can't say it's fun collaborating because with my husband, it's his style or my style, it can't be both.

@ScrapHappy That is a huge home!!!!!!Wow! I thought my niece's house was huge at 5,000 sq feet.......I can't imagine furnishing a home that big......Sounds like you are enjoying it!

Modern farmhouse sounds interesting to me. While I'm not sure what it consists of, I'd like the furniture to be new, with a sprinkling of antiques for the accessories.

I'm in Virginia and the over 55 communities here seem to use the terms "patio homes" and "villa homes" differently. I just bought a patio home - meaning it is a true one level - no loft, no basement - no stairs. OTOH, villa homes are basically connected homes and may or may not have a loft or a basement.

ETA misspelled word.
