A snake in the pool

My Dh and some of our friends always make fun of me because before I ever get into a swimming pool I always walk around the outside edge and look into it to be sure there are no critters in there. Well, today on MSN homepage there is a video of a guy who has a Cottonmouth snake in his pool. He calls someone to get it out of there and the guy wades in there - fully dressed and catches it with long handled picker uppers . A better man than me for sure! Now i will really be walking around and looking before getting into a pool.

I'm with you. I'd be afraid to have a pool where we live for just that reason. People do have pools here, but not many. A friend of ours had to get out of his pool fast when a rattlesnake came in. I alway worry about snakes in the car and was telling myself I was crazy to worry. Then there was a story on the news (Los Angeles) showing a video of a snake coming out of a woman's console while she was driving down the freeway! I'd have a heart attack. That story sure did nothing to help quell my fears, ha, ha. I'm like you, I'm constantly on the lookout for snakes. Are there a lot of snakes where you live?

Yikes! I always use the excuse "I need to see the bottom" for not going into bodies of water. Now you're telling me I have to watch for snakes in the cement ponds (OK, flashback to Beverly Hillbillies). I think I had the right idea all along - lounge comfortably nearby, slather on the sunscreen, put on my dark shades, & read a good book!

I totally understand about being cautious of your surroundings, and expecting the unexpected. My youngest daughter drives a tractor trailer for a living, and she has learned to watch for snakes, bears, and coyotes in the parking lots of the truck stops across the country.

I previously lived in new development in New Orleans surrounded by a canal and every time it rained they reminded you on the news to close your garage doors. Snakes would come up out of the canals and get into the garages. I heard more than one neighbor screaming in their garages after it rained.

Our previous house had a pool. One day, I went outside where DH was floating around and snoozing to see a big lizard sitting on the edge by DH's head. I yelped, he startled, and they all went into the pool. I then began yelping for him to rescue it, lol.

I can handle a lot, but snakes are my biggest phobia. I probably would not go within 100 feet of the pool again!

There are roadside parks here in New Mexico that warn visitors to stay on paths to avoid rattlesnakes. I wonder if the snakes are trained to stay off the paths? Anyway, I've lived here 15 years and I've never seen a snake.

We have a lot of critters here, too.........and luckily, I have never come face-to-face with one of them.......

Our pool is caged/screened in. Last summer we had a few very tiny frogs in the pool. Once in a while a stray small lizard gets in. I have a couple of nets to use for removal. So far no snakes. They are actually few and far between in my yard and gardens.

Well, I was looking for the "pool snake" to post here, and then I saw the other photos. I figured Viewpoints could handle the snake cake.

Oh my. I don't blame you. I never want to be the first one in a pool and this is one of the reasons I avoid lakes!
