I love oak and have a great deal of it in my house (including my hardwood floors)! Most of it is stained a medium brown color--except for a couple of antique pieces--as I don't care for the "honey" colored stain that was so popular a number of years ago.

Don't know about other places but here in So CA Oak furniture isn't something desired since the 1970's. I have one tea cart made of oak and it's not fancy or ornate. I am going to have it sanded and painted black as then, I can live with it.

The country oak look is a thing of the past it seems.

Oak is my favorite because of it's durability and grain pattern. I prefer the natural color of it, not stained with color. Wood types are never out of style...the color of stains they use on it are, however.

I am a big fan of cherry wood and most of all my items are cherry, except my DR furniture that was my mother's. It's hard rock maple.

My hardwood floors are red oak. When we built our home, oak was all of the rage. My builder was taken aback when I requested cherry cabinets.. He said they were not current and were out of style. They will always be my style.

I have a house chock full of beautiful oak furniture. Mostly mission style antiques. Mostly red oak.

I think if the OP can't live with oak then she certainly should not have any, but there are many of us who can appreciate the beauty and the durability of our old oak furniture.

Personally, I find most trends in home decor to be pretty much just a mechanism to make the gullible spend money on things despite that what they have already is perfectly fine. I happen to appreciate owning something that has history and that we have lovingly restored to fit into our lives, and I prefer to care for and upkeep over buying new.

When we moved to Florida we bought a brand new bedroom suite. It is gorgeous mahogany - but every single drawer mechanism has broken and needed repair! What we buy new now a days is JUNK. Most of my furniture is over 100 years old - I'm betting that bedroom set won't last us the remainder of our lives.

To those that replied, please don't take offense.

I do have to live with what I like and enjoy and oak furniture isn't something I could live with. Seems to be something not desired where I live. It's had its run.

Oak trees are very sacred to Native Americans and having the trees made into furniture is a disrespectful thing.

Many of us still like our country or cottage looks as well.

Our summer home (camper) is all cherry wood but I still like a more country look and it is evident from the decor. Every year I see Cracker Barrell always has a ton of country decor for sale - esp. in the summer and they seem to sell quite a lot of it, so I'm not alone.

Traditional is too formal for me and modern is too cold.

I like (love) oak, but not just any oak. It needs to be old, with a really great patina. I have several pieces that are old, and a couple that are newer, but people think they are old based on their style and coloring.

Quarter sawn oak is my favorite, but I don't own any.

I'm a wood mixer. I have maple, oak, cherry, walnut, and even a pine desk. I think a house looks nice when woods are mixed, and not everything is matchy matchy.

I don't care what's currently popular, I just care what I like. As with most things, oak has seen resurgences in popularity in many decades. At one time I thought I liked the look of old oak furniture but it was many years ago and I subsequently realized while there might be the occasional lovely piece, I actually don't care much for oak furniture. Nothing to do with following trends, just a matter of changing tastes. Fortunately, I never collected it. I do find some oak floors very pretty, but even there would opt for other options. I don't care at all for oak kitchen cabinets.
