When your friends post pix on social media...

... do you look at the background to see what the house looks like?

My small circle of friends and I are all neatniks. I think that's coincidental.

Just this morning I saw a photo of a FB acquaintance. I've never been in his home. In the background was a kitchen with counters full of stuff - piles of newspapers, random appliances, open and empty bottles of stuff and dirty dishes. I'm not talking hoarder status, but a definite mess. It makes me wonder if people consider this when they post photos.

I've noticed the same thing. It amazes me how people don't at least scan a pic before posting it somewhere. Often the background is something I certainly wouldn't want to share with the general public.

The first time I ever noticed this, I was looking at a magazine, that did some photos of some big athlete (I have no idea who it was now, as I don't follow sports). There was a shot that contained an entertainment center with stereo, tv, etc. There were cords, wires and plugs hanging out everywhere. Now I know this can be a nightmare with a group of electronics, but I remember thinking if I were being photographed for a national magazine, I'd look around with a more critical eye, and try to hide/disguise some of those type things that don't really add to the look of our home decor.

Yes, I look. I don't post pictures on Facebook, but would not post a picture with the background showing stuff I wouldn't want seen.

Along that same way of thinking....

I am not a happy camper when people post pictures with me in them without my permission. I am one of those rare few people left in the world who does not like having my picture taken. Nowadays people think that just because they have a camera in their phone they have the right to take pictures of anyone and anything they want and then post it for public viewing. I am a very private person and have never enjoyed having pictures taken, of me or my home. There is nothing to hide, just my personal preference and it frustrates me to no end the lack of respect people have when it comes to asking permission to include others in this mad craze for documenting every moment, person, meal & location and posting it for the world to see.

A good way to find out what your house looks like to others is to take pics of each room...especially the kitchen countertops/table and bedroom dresser.

Wait about a week or so and then look at the pics. You'll probably end up doing a little decluttering.

I look too, can't help it.

I also take photos of my items to sell for eBay and am extremely careful making sure of reflections, angles, background, focus of item, etc. are pleasing.... LOL years ago a guy selling a stove kettle had taken pictures in the buff and posted them for his sale.... went around everywhere (and can probably be looked up on Google today).... his reflection is (unfortunmately) beaming out from the shiny metal!!

That would never bother me.... I prefer people to be at ease in their own environment and not worry about coming across as being neat. In fact, some of the most gifted people I know have a pretty disorganized home... I have always been a worrier about things like having the perfect home. I wish I had eased up my myself. Beside, good friends don't care anyway what your house looks like. They are more interested in you....

I always look at backgrounds, especially in my own pictures. I wouldn't post anything on Facebook with a messy background.

@house_cat What you fail to understand that this may be "normal" for some of these people.

Clutter, trash, dishes piled up are just an everyday occurance,

Also, most people just don't care, that's how they live.

A customer of mine has been traveling back and forth from one State to another to see his girlfriend who has 4 children. He just told me the house is "a disaster", the kids don't put anything away, the mom doesn't instruct the children to do so, he's trying to change the entire household, it's just not going to happen. She accepts that's her house and the way they live.

I just kind of assume that's how they live.

Clutter doesn't bother a lot of people. I personally don't like clutter, but it's their home and doesn't really affect me.

Society is obsessed with online voyeurism, To the point of bizarre having to know every single detail of someone's house business and even what they shop!? YouTube videos on hauls omg! First time saw this oddity shook my head in disbelief. Not on FB nor do I care about someone's home. Iam type of person who doesn't collect nor clutter. Don't care how tidy my friends home is kept. Each to their own, Get a life.

I'm with you on that - I don't post many photos of me and if someone else does, I generally untag myself. I would never post anyone's photo without asking first.

Yes. I understand. I have a small house and small kitchen, so when I have company all rules about clutter are temporarily thrown out the window. On a couple of occasions, more than one guest has brought flowers and that's a real problem because I have no where to set them down.

This is so true! And it works the opposite way, as well. Sometimes I see a pic of my home and think it looks prettier than it does in person.

I used to have a friend that could have been classified as a "Hoarder" but if you were to read her Facebook page or look at the pictures she posted on Facebook you would have had no clue! She constantly referred to how she spent her days cleaning, and her pictures were always pristine backgrounds, however, if you had ever entered her home it depicted the "Real" story!

We tried to help her but she honestly did not see the condition her home was in and refused any help even from her own daughters, it was very sad!
