I'm posting here vs kitchen because my house literally stinks like a "greasy-spoon" kitchen. I rarely fry things & wow this was a real doozie🙉🙉 and I consider myself a good knowledgeable cook!

Yesterday, I decided to do southern fried chicken from scratch. I had it a few weeks ago at my cousins her husband is a great cook. Both my husband & I enjoyed it - delicious!

well, I followed his directions to the tee Except big blooper...I thought he said fill pot with oil to about 2"-3" from top & 350 degrees using thermometer before putting chicken in.

Holy moly I dropped the first 2 pieces of chicken in & the oil "exploded" and shot all over -- I mean I was scared to death...oil all over my stovetop, seeped thru to oven, counters, walls, etc as it was scorching hot & bubbling over. (Of course, I didn't finish the chicken so my cousin said to refrigerate them & I could cook them today).

Obviously, I needed less oil & bigger pot for expansion. Took me almost 4 hours to thoroughly clean up the mess!

Tonight, I made them worse chicken I ever made - the coating was like wallpaper paste (prior to cooking). No taste - coating was hard as a rock...all that aside...

I didn't have any "disasters" except for crappy meal but I have cleaned my kitchen again (walls, floors, cabinets, etc w/mr clean - vinegar solution). I have burned a candle, sprayed with Lysol & this smell is lingering. (It's the smell of cooking oil after frying). I disposed of all the oil & even moved the stove out, washed out garbage can, etc.

Any suggestions and you can be assured next time I feel like good fried chicken I'll be calling the Colonel or going to a restaurant!!!

Thank you!

I would go see the colonel for fried chicken also, rather than have the greasy smell ):

I would plug in a cinnamon wax melt, and hope it dissipates over time.

As a girl from the south, I love fried chicken, but it IS a pain. Also, DH is not crazy about fried food, so I usually pan or "oven" fry it!

Here's what I would do: is there any way you can ventilate your kitchen - open windows or use the exhaust fan? I would try that first. Then I would use the realtors' trick - buy some cinnamon sticks and put them in a simmering pot on the stove. That might help a little. Good luck!

It was ok but it just "masked" the lingering odor. I don't have candles or scented things in my home because I'm highly allergic to many scents. At this point, I'll try anything so maybe I'll go to WM tomorrow and buy them. Thank you!!!!

and yes...KFC is the answer. Sometimes, I think that I'm losing my cooking skills because I rarely cook big meals anymore - too hot we are into salads, fish, eating lite. (Even the fish never lingers!!!)

The oil exploded because you had water in your chicken.

Marinating in buttermilk, dry, wet, dry makes the best coating. You also said you "dropped" the pieces in, actually next time, check the temp on the oil and use some tongs to place the chicken in the oil gently.

Sounds like you coated the chicken and put it in the frig until tonight? If you did that, that's why you had hard as the rock coating.

There's no cure for a greasy kitchen smell, just time. You can mask the odors but they are there.

There's some great video's on how to fry chicken without lighting up your kitchen (you could of had a grease fire too) but I'm sure you'll give the fried chicken a rest for awhile.

Too hot of oil and water (from food) do not mix, you will get hurt.

When I cook things that smell I always put out small bowls of ammonia. It will have a strong smell at first but over a short period of time it will turn to be a sweet smell, so do not let children or pets near it. I put a bowl or two out on the stove and/or nearby area before I start cooking what will smell and I leave it there over night. It is an inexpensive way to deal with odors. You may have to put out more bowls if the smell is throughout your kitchen. It is worth a try!

Set out a shallow bowl filled with white vinegar - leave it out for a couple of days to absorb the odor. Or, simmer sliced lemons in a pot on the stove.

By an chance was your chicken still frozen when you put it in the oil? That is what happens when you put frozen food in oil.

To help with smell, open windows, put fans facing outside and turn on full blast for several hours. Anything cloth will keep the grease smell so launder all cloth items. I think this and time will help your problem. Good luck.

I said " well at least we don't smell that crappy oil!!!"

Then I said where are the bowls "oh I poured them out"!

Guess it semi-worked! At least you can walk in the house & not be hit in the face with the horrible oil odor!!!

Thanks!!! If it wasn't so hot here already I'd open the windows just going to turn air down lower & reclean thoroughly!

I agree with opening some windows and running fans. I burn some incense in the kitchen when I have to get rid of cooking odors. Yes, you have a strong incense smell then but that's better than smelling cooked fish throughout the house, which is the last odor I had to deal with.

You might want to gently wash down walls and kitchen cabinets near your stove. That odor clings to everything and anything near the stove might have been spattered. Good luck.
