A family member had one in their house and when I stayed there it drove me crazy. There was no place to set my makeup, beauty supplies, toothpaste, or curling iron when I was getting ready. I had to set my curling iron IN the sink while I was curling my hair--yuck! Plus, with no storage, the toilet paper had to be stored outside of the bathroom in the hallway linen closet--very inconvenient. I understand that everyone has different priorities, but for me, functionality is more important than esthetics. Just my opinion....

I prefer a vanity, but when my Mom had to use her walker in our small bathroom I had to remove the vanity and install a pedestal sink to make it easier for her to maneuver.

Pedestal sinks are both good and bad depending on your view. They're good from a design standpoint in that they're sleek, don't take up much room, are easy to clean, and can look very nice.

From a practical standpoint however, they're kind of a pain. They're much harder to plumb. There's no storage and limited flat areas to put anything.

Now that Mom's died, I'm likely at some point to remove the pedestal sink and replace it with a vanity again.

I like pedestal sinks, but feel they fit best in very small bathrooms, or in a handicapped accessible bathroom.

I urged my mother to put a pedestal sink in her bathroom when she updated several years ago, and got rid of the bathtub. Since Mom took space from a bedroom to enlarge the bathroom, she created a very large closet for storage, so the pedestal sink, raised toilet, and 5 ft walk in shower gave her exactly what she needs at 83 years old.

I updated my baths with vanities that have side drawers, to purposely cut down on inside storage, because of difficulty reaching into the back of the cabinet to pull out whatever I'm looking for.

If the bathroom containing a pedestal sink has other storage in or very near it, I don't see a problem with the lost storage space underneath, but if there is no other storage, it does indeed become a pain.

We have one in our master bath (not our choice... builders pick). It looks nice but we had to get a narrow freestanding cabinet to place next to it because there is no where to store anything.

My husband is taking it out and installing a nice vanity with sink. We will have more room with the pedestal and cabinet removed.

The cuteness of the pedestal sink got real old real quick for us.
