I somehow always wind up with fabric in some form, at my windows because it softens and adds color to tie in the other fabrics and textures in the room. I love plantation shutters, my window covering budget was never enough to afford them however. So, a honeycomb shade with a cornice or valance is my go to window treatment.

plantation shutters in every room or venetian blinds and a valance or curtain - or maybe just the venetian blind ? Also - are blinds with just a valance passe now or are they still doing that?

Also , if you had a sliding door out to a patio or lanai in your bedroom, would you put a curtain over that?

Are lace curtains passe ?

We looked at a model home yesterday that had 3 sliding glass doors out to the lanai - one in the LR - one in the bedroom and one in the den.I would put a honeycomb shade in the LR but probably a curtain on the other 2. Nice honeycomb shades for sliding doors are at least $1000 each, so I thought a nice curtain in the bedroom & nothing in the den would be fine.

When you live in a plan of homes with neighbors close by you have to also consider privacy. I don't want people to be able to look into my bedroom.

Where we live now we have all plantation shutters and the top is independent of the bottom so we can close the bottom for privacy and open the top for light. However - to do a whole house with plantation shutters - nine windows and 3 sliding doors would be prohibitivly expensive.

I have the top down/bottom up honeycomb shades on my windows. Sun doesn't pour through the windows making it hot, however, it does let enough filtered light through so I don't feel like I'm in a cave.

I'm not big on drapes, curtains, etc. Can't do Plantation shutters as I would not be able to pull my windows in to clean them.

First of all---what do you prefer? How much sun/light comes into each room? The one thing to remember about honeycomb blinds or mini blinds is that seem to hold the dust.(depending on the color). I'm not crazy about blinds or shutters but prefer sheers--volumes of sheers over the patio doors and larger windows that open to public areas-inside and out. I did scarf and ballon valances over the formal rooms. I found these beautiful large tassel and crystal tie backs for the windows/ doors so I could pull back the sheers as needed. That's just my preference. We have woods around us but I still wanted privacy at night and needed to shield some rooms from the sun during the day. I have Pella windows but still noticed a difference in temperature when some huge trees had to be removed.

I won't worry about what was passe or not---go with what you like and works for your budget.

We put 2" white wooden blinds with a matching valence on all of our windows when we moved to out house 12 years ago. I'd do the same if we moved again.

No curtains or drapes for me.

But if you'd have sliding doors, I'd have to put something on them. I don't want anyone to be able to look in at night.

Plantation shutters!!

We are finishing up building a new home. It has a slider from the Master to the covered porch in the back (large porch)

I am really trying to get away from my 'old' need to have curtain treatments of some sort on every window.

I LOVE the sun streaming in, so I really don't want anymore shades. Roman blinds I have are always crooked on the bottom. Honeycomb have been too dusty in my current house and cover too much. Venetian blinds are okay...but I want something more modern and chic looking!

For the master slider, I am hoping to go with a full plantation roller shutter system. Also know as Bypass Plantation Shutters.

See shutterblinds.com

They are SO cool!! I have seen them where they bi-fold but these don't so they won't be in the way.

They are expensive but exactly what I want!!! I plan to go in and out a lot and don't want any curtains in my way.

For the front bedrooms, I hope to have just plantation shutters. It is such a clean and modern look!! No more rods, sheers, valances etc.

The morning room huge wall of windows and ALL other side windows I am leaving naked! I think...LOL It would take a huge adjustment but we have no neighbors on either side. For me, I am thinking only the bedrooms need the privacy. We will be on the end of a dead-end cul-de-sac.

That's what I am hoping for anyways....pocketbook may cry otherwise!

I don't have any sliding doors now, but in my former home I had a slider leading out to a balcony which overlooked a beautiful setting. From Country Curtains I ordered a one way traverse rod and sheer curtain 4x the width of the slider. It was a beautiful look, let the light in, offered some privacy, but what made it so special was the way the 4x width draped the window.

In my rooms like kitchen, bathrooms, etc, I use mini blinds (I like being able to have the colors that go with each room) with swags.

I like the look of a swag so much more than just a valance across the top. The swag has like the valance across but then each end has a nice 'drape down' along the vertical edges of the window to the sill.

I would love nothing better than plantation shutters on every window - that is what I have now in my villa - but they are expensive and this house has a lot of windows plus 3 sliding doors.

Oh well, we haven't even decided if we want the house. Just thought I'd see what everyone likes on their windows.

I'll have to watch some HGTV and see what is in for windows now. Here in Florida shutters are definitely best for sun control.
