Window screens

Do they serve any purpose other than to use for opening windows? I am in the process of cleaning windows and this year decided to take all the screens on the outside off and do it right! Well no way they are going back on easily or even look good. most of my windows are never open. So I was wondering why not leave them off. Any thoughts?

If you never open your windows, then you don't need screens in them. I do like to open mine, so I have to have the screens, but they are a bother to maintain and when washing windows.

I need mine because I do open my windows often in the Spring/Summer. I live in the country with a lot of shade and the air is usually great except when extra "fragrant" when the farmers are fertilizing their fields!

If we never opened our windows, I would definitely leave them off. I like looking out of a nice clear window. However, unless it is hot with the ac on, we always open our windows. I take most of the screens off for the winter.

Even if you don't open the windows, I would think one would want to air the house out once in awhile.

We remove all of the screens from the windows in the fall. Then in the spring, we wash the windows and put them back it.

This method keeps the screens looking nicer longer. We have tilt-in windows, so we don't need to remove the screens to wash the windows.

I would suggest that you label each screen so that you know which window it was removed from. Even though you may have several windows that are the same size, the screens once they are used for several years, will no longer fit anywhere except the window frame they lived in.

If you never open a window, screens aren't needed, but you need to keep them and label them in case you ever change your mind or sell your home.

The pboblem I have with no screens is that birds fly into the windows when there are no screens and often break their little necks when they hit the glass. Screens often save their lives.

If you sell your house, most buyers expect the windows to have screens. I know I would.

Some of my windows have solar screen material on them. It cuts down the heat from the sun and helps keep my house cool in the summer. I take them off during the winter months.

My father always took the screens out in the fall and put back in the spring. Or I should say, my sister and I did. Labeling is key. My father used masking tape and wrote where it belonged. He never replaced the tape and eventually the labels fell off.

Before you take them all off, test to see that your windows deflect water when they are without screens. I lived in a house where the windows leaked unless the screens were installed.

Well after reading all your thoughts, I guess I better put these screens back on the windows. Now my dilemma is figuring out which screen goes on each window. Odd that they are all the same size window but the middle bar does not match. I should have marked them as one poster stated. Thank you all!
