I buy the Royal Palace rug pads for both carpet to carpet and hardwood floor to rug. They have worked well for me. I have tried all types in my area but the RP ones ar thicker and seem to grip better. (especially for the rug to rug). I have dogs so they get put to the test. I also like the fact that you can get a specific size or just get a large one and cut to fit your runner/rug. I do both.

I have wall to wall carpet in family room and I also have a runner that sits on top of the carpet....trying to keep a walkway a bit cleaner as we come in from the garage to an entry way in to a the family room....

The runner walks, across the carpet, driving me nuts as I keep adjusting the runner. I bought small sticky pads make for the purpose of keeping the runner straight, but they don't do a great job.....anyone have suggestions on another product that I might try? Thanks.

There is an inexpensive rug pad you can buy at the big box stores and online. It's for carpet to carpet use. It's white and looks like felt but it's slightly sticky. Cut to fit your rug and your problems with shifting are over. It does not transfer the stickiness and is repositionable. I also use one between my mattress and topper to keep the topper in place and have used one on a sofa to keep the cover in place. Good for lots of things.

When we redid our living room 2 years ago, we went with a solid fabric on the furniture instead of a floral or plaid.

I wanted to bring color and pattern into the room and purchased an area rug to put down over the wall to wall.

No matter what I did, it wouldn't stop creeping - not even the heavy cedar chest coffee table would stop it.

I'm OCD when it comes to anything being crooked and go so tired of having to empty the chest, move it, straighten the rug, gingerly put the chest back and re-fill it once a week that I just took the area rug up and put it away.

I'm guessing the Royal Palace runners/rugs stay better because they're heavier. Thinner, lighter weight rugs will walk unless you hold them in place with a piece of furniture, but who knows if that will even be successful?

Regarding the rubber pads that can go under the rugs. Be very cautious if you're using them over other types of flooring. That goes for the rubber/latex backed mats too. The latex in the rubber will discolor linoleoum, vinyl tile, or grout the it's resting on. Once the damage is done, you're out of luck and there's no fixing it. I found that out the hard way. I had a rubber backed area rug under my kitchen table. Our flooring was vinyl. When I took up the rug, the place where it had been was all yellowed. We ended up replacing the flooring and no longer have any rubber backed rugs.

They are called throw rugs for a reason; they will throw you. If you are of a certain footing/mobility dexterity, then I recommend you just deal with vacuuming the carpet a few times a week instead of the runners. You can get carpet backing that are like bathroom rugs to prevent slipping, but that doesn't work too well on carpet. There are those upholstery buttons that you can screw through into the carpet underneath keeping the carpet in place. This may be your best option if you just have to keep the things. Otherwise, start a new policy for people entering, brush your feet first. Get a good, stout outdoor mat, and one inside too. If the dirt gets past this, then they should have taken their shoes off before entering.

Or buy better quality rugs. There are some specific for collecting dirt from pets and children/messy adults. LLBean, Front Gate and places like that tend to have them.
