I turned on HSN very early this morning and Robin Shea was selling a set of dishes called "Portion Control Dinnerware". Apparently American plate sizes currently in use are large and have been growing in recent years. The concept is if you have the larger plate, you fill it up.

These smaller plates help you control your portions. We now need our plates to tell us to cut back. I guess there is also some psychology involved also.

I don't need a smaller plate to help with portion control. It's just another way to market a product.

Some people will ""fall"" for it though; I don't.

Ever wonder why the plates are so small at buffets? That's why. Most people are shy about going up for seconds when in public. It's been mentioned over the years when dieting to use a smaller plate just for the reason you mentioned above.

Some people will fill it up for sure, but I imagine those same people will also have seconds or cram it so full you can't see the plate.

My friend eats on the smaller lunch plates for that same reason, but it really has done nothing for weight loss.

The price is a bit high IMO, if you truly followed the theory you can get a nice set of pattern dishes for about $10 more and use the large for serving dishes.

Whatever works for anyone is a good thing, some people need a push.

I could use an appetizer plate and it would be big enough, I don't eat a lot at a meal, however I graze during the day and that would be my downfall. I exercise and try to burn more calories than I eat to keep my weight acceptable. Sometimes I do good and sometimes I don't.
