The Great British Baking Show

I've really enjoyed watching this rather low key baking competition. Last night's "bake a three layer pie" assignment blew me over. OK...how in the heck are they going to achieve the goal? This, I felt, was the most difficult task to date. However, I was also taken aback by efforts to create a baked pear wrapped in strips of puff pastry. An extremely difficult episode for sure.

Can't wait for next week. Am going to check out some of the recipes, once I get over this S/I flu.

Hey SF! Sorry to hear you're ailing. Hope you are feeling better really soon.

I started to watch this show when it first came into my radar and now I can't even remember why I didn't continue. D'oh! CRS getting worse.

Hi chickenbutt,

It might be the day and time that's got you a'dither. Here on the west coast, it's on at 7 p.m. on Sundays. Previous to catching an advertisement for this show, I wasn't paying much attention to TV at 7 p.m. and actully missed the first 2 or 3 episodes. (I really miss having the old TV Guide.)

Could be. I'm in the Pacific Time Zone also and Sundays are pretty full from about 6pm on for both of my Tivos.

Well, it seems our PBS station is a week behind, as they advertise the program broadcasting on Sundays at 7 p.m. and the pie episode was the one just shown. Will definitely look forward to the European cakes. Thanks for the heads-up.

I just discovered this show a couple of weeks ago, it is entertaining and educational. Yay for public TV!

I love this show. Came across it by accident but now I'm hooked. I like the challenges presented to the contestants but also like the kindness of the judges. I'm turned off by some of the Food Network competitions, where the judges can be downright nasty in their critiques.

I love this show too. I like it much better than the cooking competitions shows that we get on Food Network, etc. Being English, I love my Sunday night television shows. The Baking show, then Downton Abbey, then Grantchester. Thankfully, they are repeated later in the week in case I have to work Sunday.

I also enjoy this show. So nice not to have a screaming and clapping audience or contestants acting like they are auditioning for a showbiz career! I love the interaction with the judges/hosts. The dark haired woman is a hoot!

Hummm I thought I answered this post?? CRS.. I too enjoy this show,it is so different . What do you think of their oven doors that slide in out of the way. Love that feature.

I love the gentle nature of the show. They all seem generally happy for each other every week. The only one that flipped out was the one guy that threw his stuff into the rubbish. But even that was mild mannered I thought. And it is so beautiful there. Those flowers are just what I need to get me through the bleak winter. I wish they posted all the recipes not just a few.

I saw it for the first time this weekend. Loved it. Never knew there such a thing as a hot water crust.

Love most of the public television shows, and this one caught my eye the first week it was on. I have not missed an episode. It is fun to watch, for the baking (love it!) to the humour. And the fact that it's based in Britain, makes it even better. The mention of anything BBC, or UK inspired has my full attention. I'm looking forward to this weekend's episode :-)

(BTW, when Iain - the one who tossed his Baked Alaska in the bin - "stormed" off, I was impressed on his calm. He just tossed it and walked away and returned as if he'd settled a very simple matter. The only telltale sign of his frustration was that he was flushed. Thought that was great, though!)

My tivo started recording it around episode 2 or 3. I did see the 3 tier pie episode. I've made 3 tier decorator cakes but those pies are heavy! It was really interesting.

I liked the first episode I saw where the judge said she wouldn't take off points because her chocolate decorations were wilting in the humidity. I said to myself, if that were any other US program, they would have taken off points because she should have known not to do vertical chocolate decorations in high humidity. LOL

Speaking of which, why the heck are they baking in a tent outdoors?????

I enjoy this show...the talented bakers and their personalities, the judges, hosts and scenery. Anything British on t.v. has me hooked! The male judge...very nice looking!

Congratulations to Nancy on her win!!! So happy for she and her family.

Richard and Louis both did an outstanding job in the finals. I'll miss visiting with the bakers every Sunday in my livingroom and hope PBS brings a 2015 version of the show to the U.S.

It was a good show. I enjoyed it. I was sorry to see Martha eliminated a few weeks ago, but she had a good run.
