Those swing away type of openers are unsanitary. I had one of those for years and years and years. Never a thing wrong with it, and always worked. But those round gears actually cut into the aluminum to cut the lid off of the can. It is almost impossible to totally clean that. Because of that it harbors germs. Also, If you looked at most of the ones in people's homes, often those round gears are rusty. I can't even think about it now without feeling queasy. And....again, I had and used one for years! Now that I moved on to the newer kind that doesn't actually cut the can I can now see just how unsanitary that older kind with the cutting gears is. I highly recommend getting something like the Kuhn rikan safety can openers. Not only does it work, but just for sanitary purposes.

I don't have a manual can opener, so if the electricity went out I wouldn't be able to open my dog's food. I was thinking about a Kuhn Rikon, but the reviews say that it's hard to get the cans open with it. Is there a brand that you would recommend? One of the reviews suggested Pampered Chef, but they're $32 and I don't want to spend that much. I've been looking on Amazon but can't decide.

With the clean edge of the Kuhn Rikon, would I be able to put the plastic lid on the dog food can, or would it not grip?

The Kuhn Rikon opener is fabulous. I use it all the time and have given several as gifts. Yes, it's a little different than a traditional can opener, but once you catch on to how it's done, it becomes second nature from then on out.
