I recently became a Fiesta ware owner (new stock.)

My question is: Are you using old Fiesta ware as your everyday ware? I know the new ones say they are lead free, but are the older plates also lead free?

Thanks for any info you can give me!

Hi Jane100 and welcome to the Fiesta thread! I am using P86 (post 1986) Fiesta. It is guaranteed to be lead and cadmium free. As for the older plates, this is the information that I found. It isn't lead but uranium oxide. Read this info below:

Brilliant red Fiesta (and indeed the red glazes produced by all U.S. potteries of the era) is known for having a detectable amount of uranium oxide in its glaze, which produced the orange-red color. The company reintroduced Fiesta red in 1959 using depleted uranium (rather than the original natural uranium), after the Atomic Energy Commission relaxed its restrictions on uranium oxide.

Red is not the only color of vintage ceramic glaze that is radioactive; it is detectable from other colors, including ivory.[5] The level of radioactivity of vintage fiestaware has been published and is available online.[5][6]

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warns consumers not to use radioactive glazed ceramics for food or drink use.[7] Others recommend against using such pieces for food storage due to the possibility of leaching of uranium or other heavy metals (often present in some colored glazes) into food, especially acidic foods.[<SPAN title="This claim needs references to reliable sources. The anchor narrating the segment passes a radiation measuring tool over several products including the Antique/Vintage Fiesta plate that was produced nearly 70 years ago. The narrator also stated that it was taken off the market because when people heard about the uranium in the glaze, they did not want to buy the product. In fact, The Homer Laughlin China Company stopped manufacturing all Fiestaware in 1972 because of low sales. The product that was used within the segment has been discontinued and has not available for close to 40 years time. Fiesta today is frequently tested by federally licensed independent laboratories and is lead free, microwave/dishwasher safe, oven proof and made in the USA. . . .

Prior to World War II, it was common practice for manufacturers of ceramic dinnerware to use uranium oxide in color glazes. The Homer Laughlin China Company was no exception, using this material in the original “Fiesta Red” glaze, among others.

In 1943, the U.S. Government stopped all civilian use of uranium oxide because available supplies were needed for the war effort. Homer Laughlin stopped producing the red glaze color at that time and for that reason. Nonetheless, this interruption in production is believed to be the source of the rumor that Fiesta’s red glaze was removed from the market because it was radioactive. In truth, the red glaze emitted far less radiation than some other consumer products. Following the lifting of wartime restrictions, Homer Laughlin again began producing the red glaze in the 1950s, using a depleted grade of uranium oxide.

Homer Laughlin stopped all use of depleted uranium oxide in 1972 and it is not used in Fiesta Dinnerware which is produced today.

This information about the current products is found on the Homer Laughlin website:

Fiesta® Dinnerware is lead free.
Since 1992 when a major manufacturing process change took place at The Homer Laughlin China Company, all of the dinnerware produced for the retail and food service markets has been "lead-free." Fiesta® Dinnerware has been "lead-free" since 1986. The phrase "lead-free" has been and is used in connection with ceramics, including dinnerware products, in which a lead compound was not deliberately purchased and added as part of the composition even though a trace amount of lead may be present in the other naturally occurring raw materials. Because of the trace amounts of lead found in almost all ceramic raw materials, Homer Laughlin China chooses not to use the phrase"100% lead free."

In a recent court case in California, a Consent Judgment stated that "no detectable lead," which the ceramic industry understands to mean "lead-free," means that lead is not detected "at a level above two one hundreds of one percent (0.02) by weight or 200 parts per million of lead." The products manufactured by The Homer Laughlin China Company contain 50 times less than this amount.

The Homer Laughlin China Co. sends its products to an independent laboratory to check for leachable lead release. All products indicate a lead release less than 0.002 parts per million. FDA highest allowable lead release is 0.5 parts per million. The Homer Laughlin leachable lead release is 250 times less than the highest allowed by the FDA. California Proposition 65 highest allowable lead release is 0.1 parts per million. The Homer Laughlin leachable lead release is 50 times less than allowed by the State of California.

I hope that helps!

Not sure if the original thread is going to Thread Heaven tonight (recent decision by QVC due to poster survey). So thought I would start a new one. Yes, I am still buying Fiestaware, but more important, through that thread I have met and come to know some pretty fabulous people. Their knowledge about Fiesta is amazing. In the time we have been posting we have gone through some happy times and some not so happy times. Want to wish everyone and very Happy New Year!

As for still buying, my DH and DD gifted me with 5 place settings of Juniper. So, with a gift card, I went to dishesfast.com and bought the tea pot, chop plate, 2 more dinner plates, and the sugar bowl. Several posters here mentioned dishesfast and so I took the plunge, Can't wait to get them.

Normally I would wait to 12:01 to start a thread like this, but life here on the farm calls for an early morning alarm which translates to a pretty early evening, so I took my chances and posted now.

The Fiesta posters are a happy bunch and I look forward to "seeing" you all in the New Year!

Thank you, donasmom, for starting our new year's thread. Happy New Year to all who have posted on the previous Fiesta thread. Looking forward to reading all your Fiesta adventures during 2015.

Donasmom, I thought this was interesting---a juniper colander. Do you have one of these?

Happy New Year, Fiestanistas!!

Donasmom--thanks for starting the new thread. Your interest in Juniper has my interest piqued. I have never seen the color but I believe that I would like it. You know how it is. You see the colors online and they vary so much that you aren't sure what Juniper really looks like. That has happened with colors online that I have as well. In any case, I have asked my brother and his GF to keep an eye out for me when cruising through yard sales and antique places. I asked them to find me a ramekin so that I could actually see what the color is and how it will fit in with the colors that I already have. Juniper looks like a teal color and I do like teal so most likely, I will be hooked. That is exactly what happened with Persimmon.

Wismiss--I like that colander and especially in the Juniper. I hope that your brother is doing better. I may have missed some of the posts on the other thread while I was away.

I got interested in Juniper because of my DD. When we moved to our farm, she bought me the candlesticks because they would go great on the oak mantle in the living room or in the dining room. The dining room has one deep green wall, almost a spruce, and we have Amish furniture in ir. The candlesticks looked beautiful over the holidays. Then she and her dad put their heads together and bought me the place settings. She also bought me some bouillon bowls.

As for the colander, I am intrigued. I would like to put it on the island in my kitchen as use it for fruit. Where did you find it?

Finally, wismiss, 2014 was a tough year for you, praying that 2015 brings nothing but the best to you.

Donasmom: The colander was on e-bay. I have a feeling that it is going to go for a pretty good price. It is now at $44.00 with 12 bids and bidding ends on Sunday at 4:44 p.m. (not sure of the time zone-----does that automatically get adjusted based on where you are).

It is a 5 qt. colander unopened Mint in Box. $8.85 expedited shipping.

Meezer: I don't have any juniper, either, but I do like the handles and the trim on the colander. I didn't know that Fiesta even made anything like this. I wonder if it was an exclusive to a department store??????

I'm going to have to go back to the other thread (I'll have to go and see if it is still there) and get caught up, too. I have been busy going through Christmas items and other things.

Thank you, everyone, for asking about my brother. He goes to the oncologist Monday. He is 20 months older than I, but I started school early, so we were only one grade apart all through school. So, we have always been close. Again, thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

Some people are very good at taking pictures and sharing with the rest of us.

I do hope we hear from you frequently. We love to talk, share, and enable.

I love your comment about being a flagrant multi-color enthusiast. I started with cobalt, picked up some retired colors at vintage and antique malls, bought some scarlet because we are an Ohio State family. (Go Bucks!!). And you are soooo right - makes one happy.

I used to be somewhat shy about saying that having cupboards full of colorful dishes make me happy. On a couple of threads I have been make fun of. Not anymore. I only made one Resolution for 2015, and that if something makes me happy, I am not going to be ashamed of it.

1Professor--so glad that you found us. Welcome. I love the multicolor look of Fiesta, too. I only have 1 place setting in each of 9 colors so my table is always a rainbow. Like you, I smile when I open my cupboards and see the stacks of colors reminding me of a box of Crayola crayons.

If you have the time, and while it is still available, look at the other thread that has been going on for several years, "I Bought my First Piece of Fiestaware today" or something very similar to that. It is still here but QVC has said that they will be eliminating all the very long threads today. Lots of pictures, lots of ideas on combining pieces, recipes and just plain fun.

Please continue to stop by so we can chat.

You are the friendliest Q-threaders ever! Tossing out iridescent welcome mats.

Two of the shapes I'm using a lot now are the rice bowl:

and the little ramekin bowl:

I have, yes, crayola-colored stacks of them! (By the way, if anyone's on Twitter, I tweet whimsy, poetry, and crayon-themed bits as @WordWhispers.)

1Professor--I have a question about your ramekin. Do you know if HL changed the design of the ramekin? I was looking at your picture and then one from the HL website. Yours seems to be more curved on the side than the pictures on the HL site. I cut and pasted your pic and then did the same for the Plum ramekin which I found on HL's site. I like the look of yours better:

The reason that I ask is that I am buying ramekins right now and have a few but would really rather have the shape of yours.

1Professor--I know that it is way too early but we have been discussing the new color(s) for 2015 now that Peacock and Black have been discontinued. The first week in March will be here before you know it. Do you have a certain color that you are hoping that HL will make in its Fiesta line? I am hoping for a nice Jade. A few of the other ladies were looking for Gray.

Happy New Year, Fiesta friends!

Welcome, 1Professor! I am very happy you found us. This is a great group.

That is so interesting about your ramekin shape. I had no idea there was another shape made. I have no ramekins but I do have bouillon bowls and I really like them. I use one of them for a butter server. It actually fits in the butter compartment of our frig so it is very handy. I also enjoy our rice bowls. I have the small size rice bowls. Isn't that such a great shape.

Take care and come here often to chat!

I inherited a set of the original Fiesta from my uncle who inherited them from his parents. They have lead in them so I don't use them but I love them. We always used them when we were little kids at Grandpa's house, back in the 50s and early 60s. Such fond memories.

I have used Fiesta as my everyday dishes for 20 years or more. I have lots of colors so tables are bright and cheery.
