I love pork and sauerkraut, but wasn't aware that it is a New Year's tradition in some parts of the country. It's always interesting to hear about traditions around the country and world.

Here in the South, we always have pork (traditionally it was pork jowls, but many of us nowadays cook ham, chops, or some other form of pork), collard greens, blackeyed peas, and cornbread. I usually serve this with fresh sliced tomatoes, sliced sweet onions, spicy pickled peppers, and a tall glass of cold milk. The collards are supposed to bring lots of "greenbacks" and the blackeyes lots of "coins" in the New Year......so it's a meal promoting prosperity. My collards are simmering in the crockpot as I type......out on the porch, because DH doesn't like them and hates the way they smell up the house while cooking. I can't wait for tonight's New Year dinner and will eat a double portion of collards to make up for DH not eating any!

Help, I would like to make pork and sauerkraut for New Years but my DH and Son hate sauerkraut, but MIL and I like it. They won't eat the pork if I cook it in the sauerkraut so any suggestions on how to get pork taste in my sauerkraut without cooking it with the pork? Any and all suggestions will be appreciated!

Why don't you cook part of your pork with the sauerkraut, maybe in a crockpot, and cook the rest of the pork separately in the oven or on the stovetop? That way everyone can be happy and enjoy their New Year's dinner. If you cook the pork and kraut together, there's no way that strong kraut flavor won't permeate the meat........which is the point, as far as I'm concerned! LOVE me some sauerkraut and pork with apples, onions, and brown sugar and a liberal sprinkle of caraway seeds! I always simmer some rustic red potato chunks on top and have crusty dark bread and butter on the side. And cold beer in a frosted mug! YUM!

Happy New Year!

Slice off a piece of the pork, dice, add to the sauerkraut.Or brown a few slices of bacon add to the sauerkraut. Bake in a different pan than the roast.

i would make half with the sauerkraut and then roast the other half.

i also like the suggestion of making them pork chops or a ham and then make yourself the pork and sauerkraut.

pork and sauerkraut is so easy to do in a slow cooker and requires very little prep work. i usually use the country spare ribs OR sometimes a pork butt.

Why not just make something that everybody likes?

If two of the people on your guest list don't like sauerkraut, they are going to be having a pretty bad time because the whole house will smell like it. I'd just cook something that everybody likes and not make them miserable, but that's just me.

I always brown my pork...any kind you choose, country ribs are good....put my kraut with caraway seeds in a crock pot, place pork on top along with the drippings it cooked in and then potatoes cut into chunks with a can of beer poured over all and let it cook till done. However, I have to do this in our garage as my hubby hates the smell in the house.
