Help please... I've entered a Chocolate Cook-Off.

Our local Senior Center is sponsoring a Chocolate Cook-Off in January.

There are several categories. I thought I'd try the non-dessert category.

I need something tried and true.

Does anyone have a recipe that uses chocolate and is NOT a dessert?

White and Dark Chocolate Dipped Pretzels, you can jazzy them up with crushed peppermints and sprinkles etc

A month or so ago, I saw a chef prepare chocolate fried chicken. It was a Home show on Hallmark channel. Google it. The hosts/guests raved about it. Sweet and savory......

I'll look for it. I don't care much for chocolate, so just the thought of that turns my stomach, but not everyone feels that way. I know there will be dozens of dessert entries, so I wanted something different. This sure sounds different!

I have never made it, but what about a mole sauce? I know there is a region of Mexico that uses chocolate in savory dishes. If this is a cook off, I would think originality would be important..... what about experimenting with using cocoa and a spot of coffee to intensify a beef dish? Poodlepet2

My first thought was mole sauce, too, but I've never made it either. I know it has a lot of different spices in it as well for a very complex flavor. Not sweet at all and very good!

Paula Deen has a chocolate chili recipe. It just has 2 T. unsweetened cocoa powder in it, but it sounds really good. I've never actually made it, but now you've got my wheels turning...

Vamp, I just did a search using "savory chocolate recipes", and chilli seems to top the list. I just saw a phenomenal recipe in The Farmers Almanac. House Cat, I know there is a restaurant in the Hershey Park that features savory food with chocolate, and they had a cook book. Perhaps you could check at your library, and if they don't have it, get it on interlibrary loan. Poodlepet2

I always put cocoa powder in my chili. My daughter won a chili cook off at her college using my recipe.

Apple Pops

All ya need is an apple (or two or three), some melting wafers or chocolate chips, some popsicle sticks, and sprinkles!!!

Just slice the apples, try not to get any core in there. And stab em with a popsicle stick.

Then dip em in the melted chocolate.

Make sure you let them harden on parchment paper so they don’t stick to your tray!

Works well with chunks of banana or vanilla sandwich cookies.

These are easier snacks than a whole apple!

How fun! I have used chocolate in chili and it really works! It rounds out the flavors. There are several good recipes circulating on the internet. Good luck!

I don't mean to sound mean, honestly, but I was kind of wondering about this. Is this kind of a new thing? I saw another thread where somebody said they won a cookoff using one of David's recipes and I always figured that you use your own recipe for something like that.

But I see that it's just a casual, fun thing so I guess it makes sense. I assume that when people use other peoples' recipes they give credit anyway.

Anyway, best of luck! My recipes are usually more ingredient and labor-intensive than what folks here like, so I don't imagine any of mine would be welcome. Right now you could win a chocolate contest with me, with a bag of Peanut M&Ms. Somehow or other I got addicted to those. How weird is that?

I love Baba Ganoush-and I am sure that's a great recipe, but curiously, you know what the deal breaker is? Of course I could leave them out, but the pomegranate seeds would be too sweet. I can imagine the white chocolate melding in with the other spices used, and along with the tahini, it would add readiness. I want to try this recipe: it's been awhile since I made it. Poodlepet2

Vamp, a friend ALWAYS adds a chocolate bar to her chili. It is amazing how it changes/intensifies the taste!
