Making pomanders with oranges and cloves

I have the urge to do this. Any tips for poking the holes in the orange skin?

A nail or carpet tack to poke a small hole in the skin. .Not to big or the clove will not seat firmly. Use a thimble when you're pressing all those cloves in. Remember to Leave space for the ribbon between the rows of cloves. Enjoy your project!

I loved doing this one year, but was a bit disappointed that they didn't impart much scent. However, they looked lovely, so for that alone, they are worth it.

I used an icepick to poke holes. Eventually they dry out and can be used for a long time.

I was just thinking of this yesterday. My brownie troop used to do them when I was a kid. Not sure they give off enough scent to be worth the effort? Maybe I should try it with the grands.
