Hi Barbarainnc,

I mix them in when I make oatmeal. I only use about a1/4 cup to a full cup of steel cut oats. You have to stir for awhile because they kinda gloop together. I don't know if they make me feel fuller but I have heard they are good for you. I have also added some to the breads I make in the bread machine. Flax is very good for you too.

Best Wishes!

Barbara, Chia seeds are what is known as a "super food". It is a plant based food that is high in omega 3 (as well as flex seed meal). Omega 3 is the healthy healthy fat which helps brain and heart health and can only be found in plants (more-so than omega 6, which is derived only from animals).

Unlike flax seed meal, chia seeds expand when mixed with liquid. They develop a little jelly like expansion on the exterior. Because of this, yes, they can "make you feel fuller longer". But they have so much more health benefits than just that.

Feel free to put them in anything! I put a tbs of both flax and chia seeds in my morning cereal, smoothie, salads, baked goods... where ever you can sneak them in.

Just a little tip, when mixing them into a smoothie, put the seeds in at the very end and blend on low for only a second. I say this because I have purred my smoothie (with chia seeds in) and when it sets for about 10 minutes it turns into a jello like pudding. When you simply blend it, it distributes the seeds so it doesn't turn into a gelled smoothie concoction.

Our bodies can only get a benefit if it is ground into a meal (or flour type substance).

ITA....flax seeds need to be ground for absorption, but chia seeds, no problem. You can combine chia seeds w/ almond milk, fruit & honey...let it set for 20-30 minutes & it makes a thick, creamy pudding. Yummy...and filling.

Are the chia seeds hard to chew ? And for those who wear dentures, like my Mom, wouldn't they get under them and be a bother like berry seeds do ? She saw them advocated on Dr. Oz and asked me about them, but I don't know anything about them. Glad to see this thread here are flax seeds hard on teeth too ? She has problems with pumpkin seeds, but she tries to snack healthy. And of course, ANYTHING Dr. Oz suggests she is always dying to try and is after me to find out about and get for her.

I use flax, hemp and chia in my oatmeal, yogurt, and smoothies. They are tiny seeds and aren't hard to chew, they do swell and make things thicker like a pudding, but I don't know if they will get under a pallet.

I use chia seeds in my morning smoothie and I make a yummy vanilla pudding with them. But I presoak my seeds for my smoothie. Add about 1/3 cup of seeds to 2 cups water in a mason jar. Shake every 15-20 min until all the seeds are absorbed. Store in the refrigerator and add to your smoothie mixture as you like. For the pudding, In a large glass bowl - whisk together 1 C vanilla almond milk, 1 c greek yogurt, 2 TB maple syrup, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1/8 tsp salt. When well mixed, Add the beans from 2 vanilla pods (optional but it adds flavor), 1 full dropper cocoa extract. Mix again with an emersion blender. Add 1/4 C dry chia seeds and mix again. Let set for few minutes, repeat mix; let set, mix. Do this a couple of times until everything is well mixed. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Serve w/fruit, granola, nuts, (one or all three!) Delish! For chocolate flavor, substitute chocolate almond milk for vanilla almond and chocolate extract for maple syrup.

My son and his family have gone Vegan. They put them in their daughter's cereal and many other food they eat. He also uses flax seed (ground) as an egg substitute. I have used flax seed as the egg substitute when cooking for them. It works ok(make sure you have the correct ratio of water an flax seed for each egg required. Also whisk it and let it set for a while). In certain receipes it change the texture .
