I've used the Steam 'n Mash and like them very much. It does take something like 12 minutes to microwave a whole bag, though, so you have to plan accordingly. Could probably do earlier and keep warm in the oven.

While visiting our DD last month, our son in law had smoked a pork roast and made some wonderful mashed potatoes and gravy. The potatoes were from Ore_Ida and are called Steam n' Mash from the freezer section. They are chunks of russet potatoes and you steam them in the microwave then mash them like you would your mashed potatoes. We just had to pick some up when we got home. 7 servings to the bag according to the bag. I guess that would depend on how big of serving are taken.

HTH

JPC

I have used them and they are fine. Taste is no different than regular at home. I cannot peel potatoes, so if I'm going to have them, I have to buy the frozen mashed or get baking potatoes to put in the oven.

I was shocked when going to dinner at my daughter-in-law's once and tasting her most excellent mashed potatoes only to find they were frozen! I don't know why, but I never would've imagined they would taste as good as 'real' mashed potatoes.

I never peel my potatoes for mashed potatoes. I really like having the peels on them. It doesn't take over at all and just adds a little rustic quality to them. Plus, lots of nutritious value there. Of course, I scrub them first.

Anyway, you can make them the day before, put them into a casserole of sorts, cover it up, and put it in the refrigerator. Then you can heat them up in the microwave that day. I just put a pat of butter on top (why not, eh?) and put the glass lid on the casserole and heat them in the microwave just before serving time. Mashers warm very well in the microwave.

Mine are probably different than most people because I don't add cream or milk. It's just potatoes, quite a bit of butter, some sort of hard cheese like parm, romano, or asiago, and s&p. Then I hand-mash. Can't mess that up. They still come out creamy and nice without adding milk to them so you taste the potatoes more, too.

My dad was raised in a huge potato-growing area and knew a lot about them. He could immediately taste it if a potato had been frozen. He said they had a sweetish taste. It's one thing I would never freeze. I have bought the commercial frozen mashed potatoes and they tasted fine to me. They probably know how to handle them.

Bob Evans (the restaurant) sells delicious pre-made mashed potatoes and they are sold in the refrigerated section of Kroger, Publix, and Wal-mart. There are a variety of choices (like sour cream and chives or cheddar) For the amazing taste and convenience, we rarely feel it is worth the extra effort to make mashed potatoes from scratch anymore. The 'original' flavor is our favorite. Maybe you could give them a try. They also make an excellent macaroni and cheese.
