I absolutely LOVE the KC hams and buy them every year. This year they are getting pretty high in price, but I will usually pay for the quality.

They don't pump them full of water and salt, like the others do, and I appreciate that. Also, they don't use that fake smoke on them, like the others do. They are actually fully smoked.

I cannot say enough good about these. Unfortunately, this year, the price went up a fair amount. But I figure that the 'per use' price for me is pretty low and it's worth it to get the quality. I get scores of servings out of one of these hams, what with several days worth of servings for us, I vacuum seal and freeze several packets of slices, and I get a HUGE pot of split pea soup from what's left (which is still quite a bit of ham on the bone). That's another more than a dozen servings that I portion out, freeze, and vacuum seal so I have soup all year.

ETA - I forgot to mention that another thing I like is that their glaze comes in a packet that you rehydrate and use, if you choose. I make my own glaze, so that works out really well.

I wanted to know about the hams from Kansas city steaks. I do not buy food items from Chinese companies. CS had no idea. Does anyone know where KCS gets their ham?

That is way too much to be paying for a ham. We can buy those in the local grocery stores for no more than $30 depending upon the size and company. They start around $15. The glaze is something that you baste the ham with as you bake it (warm it really since they are already cooked/smoked) to make a nice crispy layer of flavor. Most Sam's/Costco also have them. I don't know why people pay so much for a ham!

All of their hams are from the Missouri Ozarks. We have enjoyed the boneless hickory smoked ham many times and it has always been good. We also like Burgers Smokehouse boneless sliced ham as well. Depends on what I am needing from which company.

We really like Kansas City Steak Company fully cooked boneless sliced turkey breast, a Holiday must. There are only two of us, so we eat what we want and vacuum seal the rest for later.

We always go boneless and sliced, just easier to deal with and after messing with bone in for soups and what not, decided to stick with the sliced boneless.

Some info on Burgers Smokehouse they are in California Missouri family owned, started in the 1920's and still on the original site, also in 1956 the company became the first country cured meat company in the United States to receive Federal Inspection. By the way shipping is always include in the price shown, they have special offers and sales and often include free goodies. Great customer service too, been shopping with them for as long as I can remember (no I am not family or employed by them just a happy customer) Happy Holidays

tkins

I would NEVER EVER buy from Smithfield.....in the store or from the Q....They have a practice of cruelty that I would never agree to, and there may be others that have the same practice, but I just do not know about them, as their practice must not be as bad to bring their ethics to the media....... I do like the KC hams, but buy from the KC website, and get a better price.....just check for yourself, and can get free shipping, and with paypal, or paypal credit, that anyone can get, will spread it over 6 months if needed.....I do not use their glazes, as prefer to heat in the pressure cooker.......ALWAYS........as simple, and just the best.....The best MOIST and easy ham to do, and does not tie up the oven......... KC is offering much cheaper prices than the Q for the 1st time...........

That is probably why there is such an increase in the price of all pork products.

That and the price of feed has gone up quite a lot. Chicken feed ain't cheap anymore!

We have a large and local pork producer in my county, but we are farmers and have hams as part of our annual butcher of meat for the freezer. Right now we have deer and usually have ham, turkey and deer for Thanksgiving and cane grindings. There are somethings that we still don't buy much in stores due to us living as rural as we do. Most of it is fresh or fresh frozen that we or other family put it up. That is why I don't know what the big deal is about these hams, the price of pecans, or canned pumpkins. I really don't get a canned ham like in Christmas with the Cranks. Wow, that was way new to me. We have canned SPAM and Vienna Sausages but not a whole ham. They don't come in those shapes.

Thanks for all the input. And thank you for getting the info from the site.

The chinese do not regulate their food products for humans or animals. Two years ago they were putting melamine in dog food and many american dogs died. They use wall board as filler in medicines (pills) and in cosmetics.

I have been hearing that some companies are bringing in chicken from China and processing it here. I guess we need to be vigilant.

I asked the question because on the Q website there was no information.

Henny, I heard the opposite. About a year ago it was on CNN and Dr. Oz did a show on it. The Chinese stopped buying our beef because they were afraid of Mad Cow. In order to entice them to buy our beef again, we stupidly made a deal with them to send our chicken to them for processing. It was being reported then that our inspectors would only be allowed in once a year, and we had no say in how the poultry was handled etc...like, we can't police our own food, and now we're inviting more problems, right? I don't know what is happening these days because since then, we buy organic or kosher. There is local butcher we buy from who buys the chicken he sells from local farmers and processes it himself that we also buy from. The chicken we buy tastes better too. Poodlepet
