Oh.....How I wish........

I love to cook and bake this time of year........for my dad and others, and not so much for me......but I just looked at the whole picture, as I have to drive so far for just the basics, and I know people do not believe this......BUT........Aldi's =114 miles one way.....Trader Joes =83 miles one way, Costo =80 miles one way, BJ's (that I prefer over SAMS) = 229 miles one way, Whole Foods =92 miles, one way, and last SAMS =53 miles one way........ Be thankful if you have such places near you........It is an all day, 8 hour adventure for me just to go and buy groceries...... I have to go to a meeting tomorrow just, way south of Atlanta, and am going to go to a meat store, hoping to at least get some bulk sausage, but it is 3 hours away........just for a meeting............

There must be a reason why you chose to live so far from civilization. Focus on that. I wouldn't be able to live like that. It would be like wasting my life driving for here to there.

Bless your heart....I grew up this way. My dad was a dirt farmer/rancher & mom had to raise 4 kids 8 yrs apart..3 square meals, chores....and grocery shopping for us was 50 miles, one way, for us (just a larger grocery store...no Walmart back then). Once a month, we made the trek & made it an all day event...weather permitting, of course!! We had 3 large chest style freezers that Mom filled to the brim.....to this day my sister & I still marvel..HOW did Mom do all this??!! Just amazing, amazing planning!!

Not everyone lives in a planned suburban community with Costco down the road.

Wolfie, I hear ya. Whole Foods is 2 1/2 hrs away so I don't get there often. Costco is 2-3 hours and I've never set foot in one nor a Sam's. Dunno what BJ's is. Nor Wegman's, etc. And I really do miss ethnic specialty stores like Polish Market.

For some balance I wouldn't trade the views of the water nor the snowmobiles in the dead of winter. And it is a commute to work but Smokey Bear greets me as I enter a National Forest on the way home.

Born & raised in The Very Big City you can keep it. I do miss shopping but I make my scheduled shopping trips.

Can you order any of your supplies from Amazon or Walmart for home delivery?

I couldn't bear to be that far from shopping! even grocery shopping

There is definitely a trade off for living "out", but if we have the health and the means to do the travel, it is a wonderful life.

Those are very long commutes you have to make for basic things, but with good planning and preparation, it can be done.

Snowpuppy: I am with you. My DH and I retired to northeast Ohio, to a lovely farm. I look out my kitchen window and see our very own woods, the Fall color was wonderful. On the down side, most of the stores mentioned by the OP are a long drive away from us as well. I have adjusted my cookie assortment tp gp along with the local stores' inventory.

All the stores you mentioned are 2 hours from me also but at least I have regular grocery stores in my town. Don't you have a Publix or Winn-Dixie or even a Walmart?

They are in the process of building a WalMart Express here, and pushing the gas pumps (four with dual side to make 8), but it is soooo small, you are going to have to go outside to change your mind on a product...... Publix, SAM'S, and WalMart super center, all of my "local" doctors, are around 50 miles......one way...... Great come income tax time.....but in the locals of things.........NONE......I do not choose to live here, but I am here to care for my dad who is 2 miles away, and work is 5 minutes away.....There is no stop light in my town, and the entire county only has around 7500, so no draw for others, and we have sod farms (look up Patten Seed Co, relatives), we have an olive farm, and many blueberry farms......but you can not but anything from these farms locally.......

I have multitudes of insulated bags, and have them pack it in brown paper bags, and it does not melt, even in the high temps here......Such as almost 80 degrees today alone....

Good to know about the frozen treats. My husband would miss his fudge bars. Hey, forrest, I'll trade you one 80 degree day this week for my unusually cool 30 degree day.

I know you drive a lot -- do you have interesting nature to commune in while you drive? Some days, there's nothing better than a drive in the country with favorite tunes.

God Bless You Forrestwolf, now I know how spoiled I am, most stores 5-10 minutes away, or at the farthest 20 minutes. At one time, years ago, we had a house in Michigan, 3 hour drive, so we carted everything as any shopping was hours away, but it sure was good living.

I'm more of a city dweller, though everything is relative, I guess? Lately I've been watching the TV show Life Below Zero, and you wanna talk roughing it?! I am amazed by Sue Aikens, the woman in her fifties who chooses to live alone on the tundra of the Arctic Circle, 500 hundred miles away from the nearest city, and 80 miles from the closest ROAD. In a tent!

Do you use Hughes Net? have to pay for one of those personal satellite set ups ? guess no wifi. I'd be afraid to live to far out I don't want to be a*s end to a&s end to others either. I got my little piece of heaven fenced off with 5 ft high gas pipe fence and a no trespassing sign/Private property sign at foot of drive. Country suburb guess you call it. We're lucky we got a cop next door that just has one toddler. people across the street from us in the cul de sac are our ages 60ish. people next to them just has little kids. If I had people with teenagers close to me I'd put up a For Sale sign the next day. Praise the Lord we live in peace and quiet. I'm 7 min from Walmart and 15 minutes to Amarillo, city of 200,000.

I have learned to stock a deep pantry so let cookie baking begin!!

It's a different life for sure. I learned after moving you don't just "run to the corner" for a gallon of milk. You plan your trips but I don't "live to shop", either.

I have a dr who is a specialist I see twice a yr. It's a weekend trip and a hotel stay. Other than that I'm in decent health.

It's cold up here and we're getting the 1st snow of the season!

I invested in 2/120 qt Coleman coolers so when the weather is warm and I shop, groceries hit the cooler for a couple of hr drive back home. Turned out to be a really great investment!
