I always bake mine, then cool and peel. The skin softens when it bakes.

Does anyone have a good method to peel a butternut squash?

I use peelers, small knives, large knives, you name it. It takes a long time and is tedious.

Thanks, fab!

Do you bake it until the skin is soft enough to peel or bake it until it's cooked?

I ask because I'm going to use it in a recipe that will require braising.

You can also soften in the microwave just enough to peel or cut in half to bake.

Oh-put a few small holes with a fork first.

This is the only thing I buy pre-sliced, pre-cut. It is worth paying 3x the price so that I don't end up in the emergency room.

I hate fighting with my food LOL

I also buy the frozen cooked pureed from Birdseye. Saves a step if it needs to be pureed anyway.

Vabelle, I buy the packages from the market also! It's well worth the price. I nearly gave myself carpal tunnel from trying to peel a 3 pound squash.

I want bigger cubes for this dish.

Stab it with a knife 2-3 times and put it on a glass dish...put in the microwave for 5 minutes. You don't want to cook it all the way. You only want to soften it. It makes cutting it up easy.

Why peel - why work so hard? Oven at 375 degrees - cut squash in half - scoop out seeds - wash - dry -in the seed cavity put salt/pepper/butter and 'tent' cover the squash halves with aluminum foil and place on cookie sheet - and bake for hour and half or until your fork slides in the squash easily.

Take cookie sheet out - scoop out squash to a bowl - mash any lumps - add more butter - s/p if desired. Do this a day ahead of turkey day - then just reheat on the big day.

Enjoy and never peel a squash again!

I use a peeler that is shaped like a Y with a blade across the top. It has to have a name but I don't know what it is. I lay the squash flat and peel.

I cut mine in half, scoop out the seeds, and then on the cut edge I use my ceramic Y peeler and peel away......then you can cut into cubes, roast them, put them in a stew, or any other recipe that you use...........

I love butternut squash! But I will not risk injury trying to cut and peel it (or acorn squash).

I have every tool, knife and gadget around I have yet to find an acceptable solution.

Wegmans sells fresh squash cut and peeled in the produce section. I cut into size I need for my recipe and in a minute or two I am ready to cook.

I know it cost more but my time is worth it, I serve squash at least once a week when I season. Yum!
