On 10/27/2014 Barbarainnc said:
Even if they say you can heat up foods in plastic containers, I don't. I don't want them stained up. Went to my mom's and hubby said he couldn't get the stain out of a plastic container. I told him to put the food in a glass dish and heat it up, DON'T PUT PLASTIC IN THE MICROWAVE TO HEAT UP FOOD.

I wish they would stop telling people to put their Lock & Lock, etc, in the microwave. Sure you can do that (if you are so inclined), but it will break down at some point and then people complain because the chuckleheads on QVC tell them that it's 'microwave safe'.

L&L makes a nice line of glassware that is all Borosilicate glass. I have several of those and really like them.

I've tried the Snapware and SnapLock ones and neither are anywhere near as good as Lock & Lock, so if somebody is tossing their stuff, I'd keep the good stuff first until you get the Snapware and see that it is inferior. I tried them all, just to be sure, and they were not airtight OR liquid tight.

I will be purging my plasticware as I have ordered some new Snapware from a Woot special. I will be purging my tossable bowl collection, those that I can let go of and not feel bad about, and my well worn out "good bowls". If it doesn't have a lid that fits, it goes. If the lid is warped, it goes. If it is stained beyond what is considered acceptably clean, it goes. I will then be looking at what is left in what sizes and what I actually need.

How do you purge your plastics and decide what to keep?

I have gotten rid of all but 2 sets of the lock & lock that all stack together with their lids on. It is tedious to have to open them to get the smaller ones but they hardly use up any room at all in my cupboard and I have 12 bowls covering every possible size.

Last year I realized that I had three drawers and one shelf full of plastic containers. I put them all on the dining room table with all the lids and matched them up. If something was without a lid or stained I tossed them. Then I proceeded to put them into two drawers (I also kept a shelf in the laundry room for larger containers to freeze homemade chicken stock, etc.) Everything left on table was donated with its lid.

I use plastic ware to death, and then it is not to be sold or given to anyone else, and I have a burn box in my garage, and ANYTHING that is burnable, I burn, so as not to have it in a landfill, or land up in any place else.......My dad loves to burn, so it is a win for me, and for nature........AND, I do use some that is not so bad for leftovers for him to take home....... You could always use as leftovers for others if they do not mind, and say that they are not to be returned......meaning the ones with tops and such.........

I tend to use it to death as well, which is why I toss and not donate. I'm not sure about burning them as they are plastic which means they are petroleum and probably bad to burn. I'm also pretty sure then don't really go away when burned since they just melt. I have a yard work burn pile, but that is just plants.

Over time, I have completely purged my plastic. Found that I really don't like it - don't like the "taste" that it leaves in my food, never felt it washed clean, and now that I have read that it is dangerous to use anything plastic in your microwave, I have found that I much prefer to use glass. Have completely switched from plastic bowls, containers, etc. to the good old standby - pyrex!

I have a whole, deep drawer full of storage wear. I don't need 1/2 of it. Much of it now is glass, as I've purged lots of plastics over the years. If it's stained or doesn't easily fit into the drawer, it goes.

I'm a big fan of Pyrex bowls with lids. They can easily be reheated in microwave b/c they're glass AND they store well. I make a lot of soups in the fall and reheating for a quick lunch or dinner is easy.

You should never burn your plastics in an open fire. Toxic fumes into the air, and they'll be absorbed late into the groundwater.

I've actually pretty much given up on my plastics. I really prefer the glass with the lids you can pick up at WalMart. Mainly because I'm sick of tossing the plastics when the Spaghetti stains them, which seems to happen pretty quickly.

But I tend to be ruthless when I'm tossing and have no problem getting rid of things, whether they're good enough to donate or if I have to throw them away.

Remember when Tupperware was the rage? Going to a party was the only way to purchase some. I swear, I think that stuff multiplied in the cupboards overnight.

I am like most of you. I prefer glass over pyrex for heating and storage. Just like we prefer milk from a glass bottle. We buy it in the plastic bottle at the store but transfer it to a glass bottle when we get it home.

I just went through my cupboards and I pretty much followed the same plan as you did, tigriss.

Q4u: We are moving if we can get our house sold. I think I purchased my Pyrex containers at Target. I still have a bunch of glass storage wear from the Martha Stewart line at Kmart--from literally 15 years ago! I don't think her line is sold at Kmart anymore, but besides some cracking in a few lids they are still going strong. I will have to check out Macy's to see if she still sells storage wear. I was always really happy with MS's kitchen stuff.
