I received my Ninja 4 cooking oven. I made one of the recipes that should have left a sauce to cover the chicken breasts I made. Instead, the liquid burned way. I did everything the recipe called for but there was not enough liquid for the amount of time it took for the chicken to cook. Very disappointing.

Was it the chicken picatta? I have made it before without problems, but I have to say, when you have an appliance with a vent and somewhat of an extended cooking time as opposed to am appliance like a pressure cooker with a short cooking time, you do need to check the fluid. It does boil and evaporate off. I like my Ninja a lot, but because of the evaporation/ boiling off action, I don't leave it unattended as I would a crock pot or pressure cooker.

Hi Poodlepet. It was the balsamic glazed chicken with radicchio. This was my first try at using my Ninja so I didn't know about the liquid. I was just surprised that the recipe didn't have enough liquid. You would think that if they are writing a specific recipe for a specific appliance they would get it right. I will make sure that there is enough liquid in the pot from now on. I will try the chicken picatta next. Thanks for your help.

Celiacsue, I just looked at that recipe, and I don't think there is nearly enough liquid for the cooking time. There are still many recipes I want to try, but one thing I have learned about the Ninja is don't be afraid to add more liquid: for the balsamic chicken, I would doublei-mate even triple it. You can always reduce and concentrate flavors. This weekend, I want to try making the chicken in black bean sauce with cashews. On the side, I will make some mei fun and some oven baked egg rolls that are so good. Poodlepet

I just purchased my first Ninja also as the recent TSV. I was going to make the White Turkey Chili this weekend. Can someone clarify the chipotle pepper part of the recipe? It says 1 can (7 oz) chipotle pepper but then says to finely chop half of the pepper and reserve 1 teaspoon adobo sauce. It says in step 3 to add the chopped pepper and reserved sauce. If you are not using the rest of the can of peppers, why do you need to reserve 1 tsp of sauce? I'm confused and I've been cooking a good number of years. Thanks.

I think they try to be somewhat accurate, but mistakes are made. For example, I bought the Ninja Pro food processor and there is a easy recipe for bread, and they give you an oven temperature and a time, but if you don't know anything about making bread, you are going to have problems. They left out the part where you let it rise until it's doubled, then you punch it down, let it rise again, until doubled, and then bake. That's really important information, and whoever read the gallies for them knows very little about cooking. That being said, many years ago when we had very little money, I splurged on one on Martha Stewart's cookbooks.....very little turned out and I really did not have basic cooking knowledge as I do now. Well, according to biographer Kitty Kelly, Martha not only lifted recipes from others, but didn't test too much either. I don't think she would in a million years let such sloppiness happen again these days, but over the years I have really come to appreciate Julia Child and how scientifically she approached the process of cook book writing.

An hour ago I browned and seasoned a Pork shoulder roast in the Ninja 4-in-1. I used 5 cups of chicken broth with fresh rosemary, thyme and garlic cloves to the broth. I rubbed the roast (when I seared it) with dry rosemary, thyme, and garlic powder. Boy does the kitchen smell good.

I put it on Oven/Steam Roast at 350 degrees for 3 hours. I will check with a thermometer at that time to see what the internal temperature is. (Turned down to 300 degrees as cooking fast)

I am writing down what I did to make and what I am using so if I make again I will remember. I lowered the temperature to 325 degrees after an hour and 1/2 and the temperature is now at 151 degrees. I will be taking this out a lot quicker than I thought.

Has anyone made a pork roast in this Ninja or the previous model that has any hints?

I love the browning feature and only using one appliance to do so.

Thanks

The (6 pound rolled shoulder) Pork Roast and juice I just made was awesome! I had seared it on both sides 8 minutes each to a nice golden brown. I ended up lowering the heat from 350 degrees -after 30 minutes- to 325 degrees for another 45 minutes. I took it out to rest 15 minutes and then cut it in half. It was a little too pink so I put the two halves back in for 15 minutes at 325 degrees and it was cooked perfect. I let it rest 15 minutes more outside the cooker. I left the juice as it was (just took out the herbs and left the garlic in it) and it was so flavorful. I never realized what a difference fresh herbs makes to a recipe. The garlic was not overpowering and I had 5 cloves in the juice with the rosemary, thyme, and chicken broth. I don't usually cook many meals like I have the last few days but I wanted to try out the Ninja to see if I would be returning it. Even my husband agreed the pork roast and the chicken I made a few days ago were the moistest we have ever had. I guess it is a keeper! It is unbelievable how fast this cooked on Oven/ Roast with the liquid. That's what they are calling the steam/roast method. I hope this helps anyone wanting to learn to cook differently with Ninja. There is a learning curve so as not to overcook what you are making. With this less is better. The site does suggest cutting large roasts in half on one site I found.

Did it brown as nice as the photo?

I was impressed at the moistness in the pork roast and the chicken I made. I have made the same pork roast and chicken in my Nesco roaster with the liquid added but the results were not as moist as the Ninja cooker was.

I hope QVC/Bob Warden adds a chart of meat and poultry times and sizes with settings to the Ninja 4-in-1 description for recipes. That is lacking as there is one for vegetables and not meats and poultry. Even online I didn't find any-just recipes. Unless you find a specific recipe you are looking for there wasn't one.

I did look in my Nesco roaster book for cooking times and subtracted 30% from it as the Ninja takes 30% less cooking time per their site.

Please post and share your recipes and we can help each other.

Thanks.

I have the Ninja Three in one and the cook book right in front of me and on page 234, there is a chart for steam roasting chicken, fish, pork and beef. It gives suggested cooking times and the amount of liquid and seasoning suggestions, but now I can see where it's not giving weights. The way I would deal with that is use the recipes as a guide. For example, let's say I want to make beef brisket, and the one I have weighs five pounds. On page 144, there is a recipe for brisket that uses 2 1/2 lbs..... it should be pretty easy to figure out cooking time and the liquid needed. Poodlepet

Thanks. I looked in my book and it says the same as yours. It would be nice to add how much cooking time per extra pound somewhere in the book.I figured mine out yesterday but it took trial and error to do so and I kept watching it. The meat thermometer helped the most.

I did call CS and asked them to see if a better chart could be added to the description and she agreed. I also told her that we have to use a lower rack for thicker cuts of meat than the that came with the cooker. After my pork roast started to cook the moisture swelled the roast and I had to change out the rack to a lower one I had as the lid was letting the steam out around the lid and not just the steam vent. The previous version had a higher dome than this glass lid is. The glass lid is a great feature and they probably will have a higher dome on the next version.

All in all this is a great cooker. I appreciate your input Poodlepet (cute name).

I think they will improve it in the next generation. What I would like to see is a lid with a higher dome, but also a vent that opens and closes would be fantastic. I don't like plugging vents-that is not how the machine was designed and I am Sally Safety when it comes to appliances. I am really enjoying this machine tremendously. Have you tried any of the desserts yet? I made a carrot cake from the Ninja Prep cookbook-cut the oil in half and it was fantastic!!! There are so many desserts I want to make, but I have to show some restraint here! By the way-I don't know how to find it, but somewhere on this board, somebody wrote that there is a Facebook page totally dedicated to the Ninja. It's a "closed" group, but it's moderated-which is fine by me. I am so technologically inept, it hurts, but should you find it and figure out how to join, please give me a holler! By the way, I am aptly named. We are owned by a beautiful, sweet, melt your heart Standard Poodle. We also have a crazed, but sweet Short Hair Border Collie, and together??? They keep me busy! Your pets sound adorable. I know our Shih-Tzu sure is spoiled. She knows she runs us and this house. I agree about the Ninja cover vent and having a way to close it. I thought it might have one when I see they left the vent on it. It steams out over half of what is added. That is why I added extra at the beginning so I didn't have to open the cover once it started cooking.

I have made this many times-to brown the chicken, use about a tablespoon of butter and equal part olive oil: it all depends on the size of your chicken, but it browns beautifully with this combination. Give it at least five minutes per side.....if it's too pale, add a minute or two.... Poodlepet
