Price of Apples

Two Honey Crisp Apples cost me $3.59. I live in Upstate NY and it's apple season so I don't get it. They were large apples but still. My husband told me I'm going to have to learn to cut back on things like this as we get closer to retirement -- we won't be able to enjoy the "finer" things in life!!! Wow who would have thought apples were on the list of high living. I'd rather spend my money on fresh items than meat and steak.

I agree with you. Cutting back on your health is not even in the stars. I don't eat meat and if I had to cut back, it surely would not be with veggies and fruits and nuts. I have apple trees here and I would throw you a few if I lived closer.lol

We live in NH near a couple of orchards. ""Pick-your own"" apples are about $1+ per pound and ""ready-picked"" apples are slightly higher. You can still find supermarket apples here at $.99 per pound.

I was introduced to honey crisp apples last year: they are delicious and a real treat but they were two and a half times more expensive than other varieties. This year they are 1.50 each. They must grow a limited number.... Poodlepet

Honeycrisps are 3.98/lb at the local Krogers. The wife likes Galas, my favorite is Pacific Rose.

Are honey crisp apples sweet or tart. I have never bought them before as DH likes Fujis.. However, I would like to try them.

I try to buy them in bags at the Farmer's Market...I find I get a better value that way!

Last week at our health food store, I paid 81 cents each for organic honey crisp apples. Granted, they weren't the huge size though. Boy they sure do smell good!

Delicious honeycrisp apples are only under $4 a pound in the Chicago area during the autumn period of late September into November. By Thanksgiving, the price will creep back up to around to over $3, and jump to nearly $4 a pound before spring.

Cats3000 I moved from NH and miss those apple orchards. The NC mountain apples just don't taste the same. Purchased Mac's at Trader Joe's last week, (can't get Mac's here) 4# bag was $3.49 small but tasty.

Apples and most other fruits are very high. If you eat as you're supposed to, you should have 3 fruits a day. For a family of 4 that would be 84 servings a week!

I buy bags of small apples at the grocery store for about $6. On occasion, I visit a local orchard and buy a half bushel for about $18-$20 depending on the variety. Our apple tree was destroyed during a big winter storm a few years ago, and I sure do miss it.

I tried Honeycrisp once and thought they were good, but I still prefer Empire (not out yet, but soon) and Gala. I'm thankful, too, because I'm not about to buy apples priced at 4 bucks a pound. I never buy apples individually, either.

You need to shop around. I buy all my produce at this one store a few miles away. Everything is half if not more off from the normal stores...Safeway etc. I just bought honey crisps at this discount store for 99cents a pound... huge and delicious. But I would NEVER pay over $1.49 a pound for apples EVER.

Apples are sky high here too. I had a hard time finding anything for $1.99 a pound last week.

I was just going to suggest trying Gala. IMO, they are a LOT better and they are less expensive too.

I got some Galas for $1.99# on Monday. But I think that was an ad price and usually they are a little bit more. Still - a great apple at a fairly reasonable price. Between the dog, the bird, and I, we only go through one apple a week, though, so it's not at all spendy no matter the price.

I love Honey Crisp apples also, but here in Michigan, they are also unbelievably expensive in the stores. They have been around now for over 5 years, so I don't understand why they are still so much more than any other apple. But, because of the cost, I only buy them at our Farmers market in the late summer and into the Fall season. I buy what they call seconds, which might have a small bruise on them and it does not affect the taste or anything of the apple. I can get a big bag of them for under $4.00. which lasts me a few weeks. The cost is so much better than the stores and the apples are just as good. I would encourage everyone to try your local Farmers market if you have them, wonderful place to save money and still get great food.

Isn't that terrible - New York is the second largest apple-producing state, 2013 was a record year and 2014 is expected to be very good, yet you're paying that kind of price for apples.
