On 9/22/2014 jackthebear said:
On 9/20/2014 lilypadfrog said: I went to a local Olive Garden today, first time in a long time. There was this thing called a tivosk on the table. The hostess told us that we could order our food from this. My daughter did order for us by pushing buttons. Someone brought our food, did check on us once during the meal and did remove our plate. We paid via this thing which sent the receipt to the email address connected to my daughter's card. Different people did separate things for us. So what would you do for a tip? My daughter went ahead and put in 20%. I don't like this set up, didn't even get my mint or a thank you for coming as we left.

I wonder how the waitstaff feel about this? Tips might be pooled anyway.

I can see how it is more efficient, but certainly takes away the personal contact. However one thing that I really, really hate is waiting for the check after we have finished all of our food. So this would eliminate that.

I obviously haven't been to one for a long time either. I don't like those much. There is a cool looking restaurant in Salt Lake City called the Mayan. Mexican food. Looks like you are in the jungle, I guess they even have diving shows there. The first time we went we were waited on and it was nice. The last time we went we went through a line of 'fake' food and ordered and paid at the till.

Question on eating out........

I had to go to the "BIG CITY" yesterday, and I did treat myself to a meal at Longhorn Steakhouse.........I ordered the prime rib (which actually turned out to be a rib eye instead, and not true prime rib)........BUT it was very good..........However.......I ordered their Potato and Leek gratin, and they brought it out to me in a dish that was totally broken in half.......in 2 pieces......and they did not recognize it......OK.......I instantly did, and they immediately replaced the item.......No problem........NOW, my statement is.........I overheard people talking about the fact that they now auto list a tip of 15%, 18%, and 20%........They were saying they were wrong in listing tip amounts on the ticket, as it shout be according to service.....What do you think.......should restaurants show the amount of % tips????? I generally pay more, as the server is not responsible for the food, or quality, and it should not be held against them, as now days someone other than your server, brings out the meals......The waiter/waitress is generally paid a small amount.......and there are several to split the tips that are left.........Your comments.......

Unfortunately, many folks are unable to do simple calculations and might believe they are leaving a decent tip. The percentages that are printed on your receipt are just suggestions as to what you might tip, not what you must tip.

I actually find them to be helpful because it saves me the trouble of trying to figure it out in my head, lol! Saying that, I still use my own discretion when deciding how closely I follow their "suggestions".

I've been to several restaurants that show "Suggested Tip" amounts at the bottom of the check. Doesn't bother me in the least. Doesn't influence me in the least. I ignore them and tip what I want to tip. However, if the tip is automatically added to the bill with no forewarning on the menu, I'll let it go and take my business elsewhere. I might also dispute the amount with my credit card issues on the basis of no information prior to receiving the restaurant's bill.

The cook may have filled the gratin dish and handed it to the server, who didn't notice or...sometimes the kitchen will mess with the waiter and refuse to send another dish (once as a young teen, I worked as a waitress and the cook dropped the toast on the floor, picked it up and gave me a mean look. And put it on the plate. If I hadn't been 15, I'd have dropped my tray...oopsie! but I was scared of the place--they were mean.)

As to tipping, if you are tipping 15%, every SIX dollars is one dollar, so an $18 dollar tab is $3.00 tip. If you tip 20%, then every FIVE is one dollar. See how close your bill is to a multiple of five...$23 dollars, ok, that would be $4 and some change.

And put it on the plate. If I hadn't been 15, I'd have dropped my tray...oopsie! but I was scared of the place--they were mean.)

As to tipping, if you are tipping 15%, every SIX dollars is one dollar, so an $18 dollar tab is $3.00 tip. I just did that in my head.

I just multiply the total bill by 2... to figure 20 percent.

If my bill is $30...x 2 is 60... $6 dollars
