2/3 cup butter

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 1/2 tsp vanilla

2 1/4 cups flour

1/4 tsp salt

3/4 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

2/3 cup buttermilk

3 cups apples, peeled, cored, and chopped

1/3 cup chopped nuts..I used pecans, walnuts would be good too

Cream together butter, sugar. Add eggs, and vanilla and beat till well blended.

Stir in dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk. Fold in chopped apples and nuts.

Pour into a 9" by 13" greased pan and sprinkle topping over cake.

Bake in 350 oven for 40 minutes.

Cool, serve with whipped topping and a drizzle of caramel sauce if you like.

Topping:

1 tbsp melted butter

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup rolled oats

2 tsp flour

1/4 cup chopped nuts

1/4 cup coconut

1/4 cup toffee bits

2 tsp cinnamon

Crumble this together and sprinkle over cake batter.

This is a recipe for Autumn Apple Cake. The picture looked so good. I do want to make it.

Heading to VA this morning. DH is due for annual x-rays on his stents. They keep checking to make sure all is well. We are very pleased with the VA here in Indiana and Grand Rapids. Could ask for better care.

Enjoy this day.

I can't do the graphics - sorry about that - but didn't want to wait to get this started - I believe Soushi is in WVa - hope she and her Dh are having a great time.

Am fixing a HUGE chicken breast - boneless - in the cooker with onions and cut up potatoes. As a side will have veggies fixed in a WOK - love them that way.

Have been super busy today and tomorrow is another busy day. Sigh.

Am very unhappy due to our drought problem what our local water company is doing to us - not just our water company but most of the water companies and I personally think it is a time they are going to gouge their customers and it will continue. A biggie is we must cut down 20 percent in usage - have no clue how I can do that as I have a displaced family staying with me. Also they are adding a water meter charge - EACH MONTH - based on the size pipe you have AND of course the rates are increasing. Fines are astronomical and I spent a while in tears but decided that accomplished nothing. Get me out of this greedy state. Other ideas they had - I remember the drought we had in the 70s and still abide by things they put in place then and they are also including those. But it will not be enough for these greedy souls. They actually said in their dissertation the color from grass has gone from green to yellow. I am soooooooooooo upset. By the way this summer, sewer, gas, electricity AND trash pick up have all had increases which are very high.

Hope all have a great day.

Winifred Thanx for starting September, I feel for you & the things going on with water, etc, the politicians are making our lives miserable, sorry to say & it seems we're held captive, my only recourse is to not vote for any incumbent, my own way of "term limits" as the court in Illinois turned down our petitions to have it put on the ballot, no surprise there, what has happend to "we the people"? well off my soap box, tonite was leftovers from the neighbors bbq yesterday, (I made that "pink stuff" as it was short notice & that's quick & easy) sure was welcome after all day dealing with the passengers at O'Hare

Hope you're having a good time Sushi & will be back soon

Take Care

Hi Winifred! After the fall-like weather part of last week, the temperature in my area hit 101° today. Athough our situation in no way compares to yours, we also need rain. I really feel for you and the squeeze that's being put on your purse because of drought measures CA has instituted. I will say a prayer for rain and better days ahead for you........ Can't create paragraphs on this tablet so the best I can do is se a series of periods. ( I still haven't done much at cooking. The employees at my fav chinese restaurant know me and what I want to order; Golden Corral and Applebee's also see a lot of me. But I did bake some cod and salmon along with some roasted veggies which I enjoyed. Have you ever seen a YELLOW zucchini?! They were a golden yellow like a ripe banana. There are several recipes that I have gotten from this Kitchen & Food forum that I will be attempting when I really get back into cooking. There was one posted that I copied today for Maryland Crab Lasagna that I'm anxious to try-- except that I intend to use additional seafood. And of course, soups!!! ..................... Well, you take care and try not to worry. The Almighty will see you through these tough times.

Morning all,

Looks like another beautiful day. DH just left for golf and we have plans tonight for dinner with friends.

Strange, we changed out the bird feeder with some high quality seed from specialty store, and no birds. No sparrows which is good, they would swoop down and clean out the feeder quickly.

Bought 6 lbs of hamburger from Costco's that I will repackage and freeze today. Good sale, $4 off the package. And their hamburger is good quality too.

Hope everyone is doing well. Please post, even you lurkers, we love company.

Soushi, glad you and your DH made it back home safe and sound. Also hope you have rested.

Got hotter and more humid AGAIN here. Golly darn for a couple days it was almost super nice. The experts say Sunday and Monday we will be cooler AND there will be a lot of rain. Water is a touchy subject to me - I cannot even have a bird bath any more. If a neighbor says I do and I get reported it is a $500 fine for each day I am not following orders. I may have mentioned but we are ORDERED to turn our grass from green to yellow - lots more but I am sooooooo upset over this entire thing. They have added lots of $$ to our bills and those additions go through 2019 even if the drought ends tomorrow. What a racket. Let me OUT of this greedy state.

Am fixing a roast with onions in the slow cooker. Also collards and we will have corn on the cob AND the rest of the macaroni salad. I do not have potatoes - imagine that.

Hope all had a great day = stay cool.

Sure looks good Soushi. Preds always enjoy your pix. Brewhaha, stay cool.

Today all I have heard on the news is stay in, stay in and stay in. Guess that hurricane off Baja is stirring up some massive humidity. It was horrible yesterday and worse during the night - that is so rare but happening more and more.

More and more yards are nothing but dirt and weeds - that is so strange for out here but that is what is happening. Some of the homes are gorgeous showcases and their yards are completely gone. It's only going to get worse with the new RULES the water company has set up. Absolutely unreal. Feel so bad about no water in the bird bath - those poor critters are doing without as it is and to add bird baths to it, what can I say. Interesting in that I see a few jerks still around - saw two people watering their lawns full blast this time of day - that is ludicrous. Also saw a couple places where water had run off into the street - they had washed their vehicles in their paved driveway. My goodness.

Gotta run - have a good day and have no clue what I will have for dinner. Last night we had a delicious roast cooked with onions of course, collards and corn on the cob - very tasty.

Again, have a great day!

Hey Winifred, Could you not give the birds potable water that you used to prepare something like drained pasta water, water from bolied eggs, water collected from 'rinsing' a food condiment off of your hand for instance or water run over fruit like an apple, grapes, or collard greens used to cleanse these things? Poor feathered friends but we do know that God takes care of them, too. One year here when we we couldn't squeeze water out of the clouds, the squirrels took to eating tomatoes off the vines to get their water. I wonder would birds peck at tomaotes to quench their thirst? Oh, how about a watermelon rind-- lots of liquid left after eating them!

vabreeze, I must be slipping. NEVER thought of any of the ideas you suggested. I always CLEANED their birdbath super well and put fresh water in every day. LOL. Guess, however, I need to do some thinking about what kind of dirty water I put in there.

Super humid - just miserable. It has been a difficult day - and tomorrow the electric company says to cut WAY BACK between 2 and 6 p.m. Hottest time of day. Not sure how well I will do on that. Like I keep saying, California is no longer the Golden State.

Morning all,

Just beautiful yesterday and today looks like another repeat. Weather is outstanding. DH off to the golf course. I am meeting daughter for lunch and a birthday gift. Today is her birthday.

Yesterday we served coffee at church. Love doing this. See so many people that I have missed. We were swamped. The first two services I couldn't serve coffee fast enough. There was always a line. We talked later and think it is due to summer coming to a close, school starting, and vacations have ended. Great to see so many for all three services.

No cooking yesterday. Had our usual Sunday chicken dinner out. I have the bones of a recent rotisserie chicken cooking in the crockpot. Will strain it and use the broth. Making the Olive Garden copy-cat recipe of soup for my little craft group dinner tomorrow night.

Bought almost 6 lbs of hamburger at Costco's and I packaged it into 1 lb packages. It was on sale and is very good quality. Paid less than $3 a lb for it and that is good for around here.

Okay all, time for more coffee. Enjoy the day.

Beautiful weather Soushi? What on earth is that. Sigh!! At any rate yesterday and today several areas within minutes of me have had mud slides and flash floods but perhaps 5 drops fell here. That is NOT FAIR. I certainly do not wish any harm on anyone but would have loved to have had some of that moisture. Humidity is not as bad today as what it has been but it still is pretty bad. Ran some errands as our illustrious electric company also said to CUT BACK between 2 and 6 p.m. today. Always something with these utility companies. By running errands I was not using electricity in the house - much that is - but of course wear and tear on the car and gas made up for it. LOL.

Had veggies in the Wok AND pork chops cut up in the slow cooker - with onions of course. Poured barbeque sauce on them. Really good.

Went to Mentone today and we ate at the Mill House - an ancient OLD western type place. wooden floors and stone floors - everything wood - have been going there - not often in recent years however - since I came to California in the 60s. So that was lunch/dinner for all of us. Then to Foods 4 Loss for some green beans and other items. Did not buy any roasts as they were horribly expensive - am hoping they are on sale some Wednesday - say a prayer. Am almost out of roast - I also cut them up for stew meat. With their sale price it is half the price of regular stew meat.

Hope all have a great day.
