Growing into baby flies! Driving me nuts! There aren't just a few, but lots. SO, do I get those sticky strips? Any advice will be great. I do keep fruit (peaches) out on the counter ripening.

The fruit flies are coming from the peaches. The live and hatch in the skin of fruits.

To get rid of them, keep an empty bottle of wine open near the peaches. Empty meaning a few drops or sips in the bottom of the bottle. They will fly in and they can't get out.

In the future, wash your produce in cold water and a half cap of bleach. Rinse well. That will kill the eggs in the skin.

They live in the sink drain hole. I pour purex down there or I guess vinegar would be good too. Purex, should kill about anything.

I've had luck putting a little cider vinegar in a small dish covered with plastic wrap. Make a few small slits in the plastic so the gnats can get to the vinegar. Once in, they can't get out! I change out the vinegar every few days until the gnats are gone. I haven't had any problems this summer as I've kept all my produce in the fridge.

Just put a small glass of apple cider vinegar by the kitchen sink; no plastic wrap.....the next morning you will see them floating in the vinegar till there are no more; took a few days to get rid of all of mine.....I have left a small glass of the vinegar on the counter now in case they come back. This was the only thing that worked for me.

I found out the BEST thing for them by accident: put out a saucer of milk at night. The surface of it will be covered with them by morning.

I tried the vinegar, wine, etc. - this worked better than anything.

I'd never heard of the apple cider vinegar or the wine trick. I'll have to remember that!

We'd never had a problem w/them until last Summer. They were so bad that you could barely eat w/o them flying around your food and your face. And, everytime you walk into the bathroom, you'd see 2-3 of them on the mirror. UGH! A girl who works @ a pest control place told me to put a cup of bleach down each drain in the house and even the toilets. They live in the drain and eat the gunk that is in the pipes. She said to do it every 2-3 days until I saw improvement. The ones that were already flying around would just have to be killed when we saw them. It took about a week for them to finally start to go away. I tell everyone that little tip bc I don't want anyone to go through that mess. It was AWFUL and made us feel like we weren't clean people.

I had a fruit fly problem 2 years ago from bananas ripening on the counter. I never had a problem before so when I saw a few, I didn't do anything about thinking - a few gnats (I get plant gnats). Well these multiply and by the next day, they were everywhere. I googled and set out the red wine vinegar traps. Here is a link - you will need to copy and paste since I'm posting from an iPod. It will explain quite a bit - getting rid of the fruit, wiping down, and trapping. There is a section on the drain pipes as stated in above posts. I never knew that. Good read and good luck.

http://insects.about.com/od/insectssociety/a/10-Tips-For-Getting-Rid-Of-Fruit-Flies.htm

Are they gnats or fruit flys? Fruit flys are kind of red. Everytime I buy a plant from Walmart I get gnats. I bought a small bug zapper and use those yellow sticky cards. I cut them into 4ths and put them in my plants as that's where they live.

Do this! It works. Pour some white vinegar down your kitchen drain with baking soda. You will see and hear the drain fizzing with white bubbles. Don't rinse after, just leave it. I just got rid of annoying gnats in my kitchen a month or so ago. Someone told me to do this, and after trying the other suggestions, some of which are mentioned here, this was the only thing that did the trick. I do it every two weeks or so now. They lay eggs in the gunk in the drain so I'm told. I'm always a skeptic, but I couldn't believe it. Good luck.
