I'm Just Sick About This - My Sad Tupperware Saga

I live in the garage apartment of my landlord's house, and about a month ago he contacted me and let me know he was going to be making donations of household goods to a local hospital thrift shop. Since I was a former Tupperware salesperson, I felt it was a great opportunity to unload piles of it that had been just sitting in the basement that I was never going to use. I brought the Tupperware upstairs and started washing it out by hand (I have no dishwasher) in order to get any musty smells out. I started washing lids only, because I could just do a ton of them at once, and stack them in the drain tray. When they dried, I put them all in a big plastic bag and then washed the rest of the Tupperware. I ended up having 3 large trash bags filled with Tupperware, that my landlord picked up and took to the thrift shop.

The next time I went to the grocery, about a week later, I picked up a nice bunch of fresh fruits and vegetables, and when I got home, the first thing I went to do was put them in my FridgeSmart containers. I went to get them from my cabinet, and to my horror, I realized that there were no lids to them! I had washed them out with the other lids, and the landlord had taken them with the other donations. I called thrift store, but it was too late - they'd already thrown them out, because they had no mates.

I called a local Tupperware distributer about replacing the lids, but because the FridgeSmart containers had been totally revamped, and mine were the older color and style, replacing them would be very expensive - at about $18 apiece for each of the six lids! I was willing to just give them to her, but she would need to pay half or $9 for each, and the total for her to replace the lids would be $54, and she could just buy a brand new FridgeSmart set for around $40 with her employee discount. The only thing to do seems to be to just put my set out in the plastic recycles, which I haven't had the heart to do yet. I need a hug.

When I moved the last time I ""lost"" a box containing my favorite books. I think that they were put in the donate pile by mistake. I was heart broken too so I know how you feel. Hope you have a better day.........

I use older Tupperware with missing lids for other things. The fridgesmart containers are so sturdy. I would repurpose them to hold things,organize things...like makeup ,nail polish,gravy and say e packets,toiletries,spices,or whAtever needs correlating in my cabinets,shelves,fridge,etc. I am using a white canister set I found at goodwill (cracked lids) as utensil holders and its awesome.Also check EBAY. They might pop up there.

Thank you, mominohio. I lost all of my jewelry two years ago next month in a home robbery, and I'm a breast cancer survivor, so yes, I know what "actual problems" are.

The sad thing also about this story - here you are trying to do a good deed. Not only by donating the Tupperware but also washing it. And then to now not be able to use your FridgeSmart.

All the good feeling from donating went away when you now look at your FridgeSmart. I bet there is someone who also used to sell Tupperware that also has "extras". Now to only find that person.

Sounds exactly like something I would do. OH WAIT I DID! When I was cleaning out my Mom's house - I put her Bible (with all the family important dates etc), her jewelry box and all her special things in a bag. My husband wanted to help and was putting the trash out - you guessed it. The bag went out in the trash. And we ended up bringing bag of trash home with us. I am sure that doesn't make your situation any better but you have LOTS of company.

Please don't discard the containers. I saw a new product the other day, but can't remember the name. They're used as lids for containers but are more like plastic wrap with an edge like a rubber band. LOL, sorry that's the best I can explain. I'll keep looking for the name of the product and let you know.

I threw my best friend's Christmas present (a Coach bag) out in the garbage.

It was boxed to go to the post office...but I mistakenly threw it out with the garbage boxes.

I can relate. I gave a diamond necklace away with a donation to the salvation army. It was in the pocket of a tote bag. I put it in there with an outfit I was going to change into after work, but forgot it was there. When I traced my steps, I remember putting it in there. I never found it. I bought a replacement, but it's no where near as nice. I'd keep looking for lids. Everything shows up on eBay at some point.

Hugs to you. I'm sorry that happened. This won't make you feel better, but I also have a donation disaster story. My daughter was trying to help one day, so she offered to take my donations to Goodwill. She and a friend loaded everything into her SUV and took it one weekend to the Goodwill donation center. The following Monday, she was panic-stricken. She couldn't find her school books. She remembered the Goodwill volunteers helping to unload everything and they must have taken everything, even things not in trash bags. Her 6 hardbound school books had been in the back seat. We called immediately, but they said they couldn't find them. That was a $450 mistake.
