My electric level billing is $60/mo, and it looks like they'll owe me a few free months again this year. My gas level billing $46, and I'm still way in the black and heating season is over, so I'll have a few free months for this utility as well.

I was having a conversation with a friend via PM, and she was telling me her electric bill is $1300 a month - that's more than my mortgage! She said it was $800 until recently, when it went "way up" (I'd say she was already there, at $800)!) She lives in MD an hour outside of DC and her daughter and 3 grandchildren live with her.

OTOH, I live alone (well, there's the critters, but they don't use much electric ) and for an entire fairly large house in the mid-south pay around $40 a month. (My gas heat averages $57 a month on the budget plan.) Even when I lived in areas where the cost of living was high - NYC and Hawaii - my bill was never over $100 a month.

Anyway, I'm just curious - is your bill anywhere near as high as hers? I can't begin to imagine paying that much....

I am on the budget plan...it covers electric, water, sewage and garbage pick up, it runs about $230.00 month. One month out of the year usually in September we have an adjustment month, bill either goes up or down that month and then the budget is set for the the next 11 months. I like knowing what my bill will be each month.

I also pay $25.00 a month for our gas fireplace, I am on the budget for that as well, summer it's a minimal charge but I pay $25.00 so that I am overpaid for the winter months.

I live close to Maryland, just 10 miles from my town where I live. have heard some people do pay high electric rates in Maryland. Never have lived there so I can't really say if it is that high.

living in Delaware, electric rates are outrageous here. I pay $220.00 a month, (rates are going up come 1 June, 014) during the winter (we do have run an large room electric heater $350,00 a month). have heard from people here in Delaware are in the $800.00-900.00 range monthly. I am not sure what these people use electrically. I know that some do have pools and keep their pools heated.

I heat my house by propane (Delaware is just getting natural gas). talk about outrageous prices. during winter into the $200.00 a month range and we keep the house at 60 degrees.

No! I have a 2800 square foot house all electric just two people and my highest bill during a cold January is about $300. The average bill in the winter is about $200 a month. That is Keeping the house at 65 degrees all day and all night. In the summer, when the heat is off, our bill runs about $80 a month (we do not use air conditioning, just fans when warm.) We are fortunate here in the Pacific NW to have cheap electricity compared to the rest of the country. Oh, and our house is not energy efficient....we need new windows. I am sure that would help make our bills lower.

I live close to Amarillo, Tx and the electric down here makes you pay for what they call their 'fuel cost factor' and it's a 1/3 to a half of your actual bill. So, if you use 200 they tack on another 100 to pay for their cost of doing business. One month ours was 500 with 2 people and stat on 78`. We had to make changes , so, now we turn it on at noon and let the a/c run till 8 then just use the fans. So, 15 hrs off and 8 on bought it down to 250 we can live with that, but, when it got to 500 we were scared it would start approaching 1,000 if we didn't scale back. We just refuse to pay that much I stay in light gowns thru the day and run fans as much as possible.

Utility Co.'s are gonna run us all to the poor house . Nothing, but, GREED !

That sounds crazy to me. Most people I know who live around here (Arkansas) just do not make that kind of money. My house is about 2000 sq ft and ours is 150-200 a month for spring and fall. In the winter and summer, it will usually be between 250 and 300. I will admit, that I am not gonna be miserable in order to have a low bill and keep it comfortable. We hate to be hot and can't stand to be cold.

I am pretty sure we are still paying an ice storm recovery charge for a storm that was 2 years ago. After the icy mess we had this past winter, I figure that will be a permanent fixture on the bill.

I live in Pennslyvania and since we heat by oil be keep our heat on about 60 degrees and use electric heaters. Our electric in the winter is about 160.00. But it can cost us up to 800.00 to fill our oil tank. That was the highest its ever been. So if we only have to fill up the tank only once or twice in the winter we are saving quite a bit even with the heaters.

If your bill is low, it won't be eventually. All areas kick it up eventually. Your not gonna win. Most people wouldn't do what we do to survive. They're just not gonna live that way. They would rather apply for aid. We older people are used to buckling our belts a little tighter and do what U have to do . It's a matter of principle with us. I'm stubborn as a mule and I'm not gonna pay 500 a month for electricity. Thank God we have a gas furnace and that is reasonable just the electric eats us up if we give in to it. We're training ourselves for the eventuality of having to live on SS you can't have huge electric bills when your not able to work anymore. Thank God we have a well insulated new home with 2x6 walls. That helps.

I'm on a budget plan from my electric co., where they bill me the same amount throughout the year based on my average usage & I pay $130 a month. My house is a little over 1700 sq. ft., but is well insulated & I have the AC thermostat set at 73°.

My gas bill is usually only about $20, except for a month or so in the winter when I use the furnace a little more, but the highest my gas bill has ever been in 8 years here is $95 for one month. I also have a gas stove & water heater.
