Favorite Cheese Grater...

What is your favorite block cheese grater?

I've always used a stand up type grater, don't know the proper name. The kind that could grate the knuckles!

I own this OXO snap-apart grater. It makes for easier cleaning in the dishwasher and easier storage. I've had this one for 9 years, and it's like new. As my hands stiffen up more and more, however; I'm thinking I might have to look for something else.

That's called a "box grater", @Sunshine Kate. I have an electric food processor that can shred cheese but most of the time I use my manual one that I bought from HSN a few years ago. It's really handy for cheese, nuts, crumbs, shredding Brussels sprouts and broccoli, etc. We have gifted it to many in our family.

It's not the exact one, but similar to this one.

I use a Geedel rotary grater purchased at Amazon for around $35. I like how it suctions to attach to the countertop, and the handle grinds smoothly.

I use the same type as @JeanLouiseFinch uses. Also purchased at HSN and upgraded over the years as new discs and minor improvements are made.

One of my top kitchen gadgets and would replace it with the same in a heartbeat if it became necessary.

I use a flat one-side grater similar to this picture. Easy to clean and store.

I have a box grater, a manual grater and a small microplane grater. I'll use them for a quick sprinkle.

But, my favorite way to grate cheese is in my food processor. I use this kitchen appliance almost every day for something. I wouldn't want to be without it.

Years ago I bought the same type that they used at the Olive Garden restaurant. I might have even bought it there. They made it look so easy for the waitstaff to add fresh grated cheese to your meal.

I was lucky enough to pick up the amazing Ninja Pulse blender-processor during its short stint at QVC, so that's typically what I use for cheese grating. I really wish they'd bring it back so I could buy a backup because I'd cry (maybe not even exaggerating!) if it ever broke.

Otherwise, depending on the cheese, I'd either use a traditional box grater (this OXO version with the bin is great) or one of my Microplane graters:

I don't buy packaged shredded cheese anymore. Well, 99% of the time anyway. A few years back we were celebrating Christmas with my sister's family and I didn't want to arrive empty handed. I just needed a token gift so I bought my nieces the shredders, then got them for our kids too. It had to be one of the best ideas I've had. My nieces raved that they'd been wanting one and afterwards they've told me how they use it all the time.

@JeanLouiseFinch --I am sure its because my original one was packed away so I bought another one. Yes I have been buying cheese blocks and shredding them up too. Makes such a difference in how the cheese actually works-- like cheese is supposed to without all the stuff the shreds are caked in. Nice gifts too.

I agree that this grater is awesome. I have purchased 2 extra for gifts and everyone loves it too. I have an extra one for myself also.

This is fun to use and grating a brick of cheese gives you piles of cheese moist and delicious. Makes a great Mac and cheese.

Here is a hint for anyone having a problem attaching it tightly to your counter:

Press down on the top of the shredder as you lock down the grater and it works awesome on any counter. That is why some have a problem getting it down well. My husband did this when I didn't have mine locked enough. Works like a charm.
