The plastic ones just weren't holding up well. I had my first KA for about 30 years..metal gears. It finally gave up, so I bought a new one. That one lasted only 3 years. We did our research and found it had plastic gears and of course it was way out of warranty. We bought our 3rd one with a guarantee from KA that they had gone back to metal gears.
