Today's Farm Stand Haul

I was so taken with the produce I bought at a local farm stand, I just had to take a picture! Fall is just as abundant as Summer, in my opinion.

Are you still shopping the farm stands?

the farm stands and farmers markets in our area shut down usually at the end of october. there are some FARMS that are open that have activities, small animals, hay rides, and have some produce and pies and apple cider. we do go, but it is generally $$$$$.

@sunshine45 That's Romanesco. At my local farm stand, they call it a kind of cauliflower and charge accordingly ($3.25 per head). I've also heard it called broccoli. The taste is more like cauliflower, but SO much better. It's buttery and tastes just like the freshness of the garden. I like to steam it in a pasta pot, but DH likes it roasted. Basically, treat it like cauliflower.

@PA Mom-mom. Huh. Never heard of or seen Romanesco! Looks intriguing though. Looked it up and found the recipe below, which could also be used on broccoli, cauliflower, squash, etc. Would love to try the Romanesco, thanks!

@LdyBugz Thanks for the recipe! This is similar to the way DH likes his romanesco, cauliflower and broccoli. I love to add the freshly grated parm at the end of roasting. It adds a bit of salt and savory. Yum!

Beautiful looking produce!

DH went this morning with DS and they also came home with some caulifower (purple), acorn squash, celery and a few peppers.

DS picked up a large pumpkin and carrot muffin for us to share. I had mine later this morning with a cup of coffee.

ETA: Our local weekly farmer's market stays open every Saturday until Thanksgiving. Then it's 2x a month over the winter and the location is moved indoors to a smaller market. They sell meats as well as baked goods and a small amount of produce.

@PA Mom-mom. Goat or Feta cheese would be good, too. Think I'll visit the small, local farms in my town tomorrow and see what they have. Now I'm really craving roasted veggies. You inspired me!

P.S., Woohoo! Romanesco available at one of the local farms. Will go tomorrow!

I went to the farmers market last Saturday. I bought cauliflower, (the heads were huge), and red peppers and garlic. There was an abundance of everything. I have had romanesco before and it is so good. Everything was so much cheaper than in the stores.

@PA Mom-mom I'm in South Jersey. Nothing but farms & roadside food stands along major highways & dirt roads.

Paramour came over early am w/live crabs he got from the crab roadside stands along Rt 130. Well, not really a stand. Just some guys sitting on a chair surrounded by barrells of live crabs up & down the highway. The earlier you get there the larger the crabs (alive) you will find.

We have professional food stands that sell produce & refridgerated stuff like eggs & milk. You can even taste fresh milk right from the cow ******.

Home made produce road side shack stands. These are usually right on the farmers property/fields/along a dirt road. Only early in the morning can you get fresh eggs.

Mostly every Saturday, me & a few neighbors will drive over to Philly to the Italian Market.

@Mz iMac Be still my heart! You had me at live crabs! It's been a hundred years since I've had crab gravy or even Old Bay steamed crabs! Lucky you! You are certainly in the heart of fresh produce central.

We used to go to the Italian Market about every 6 weeks, but we mainly went for cheese, fresh ravioli, and salami.

There was a time when I would sell my "gagootz" to some of the produce vendors along 9th St. It was more popular with the Asian vendors than with the Italian vendors. Those were the days.

Our farmer's markets are not cheaper and often are labeled with same label you get at grocery store.

@PA Mom-mom --I love romanesco too!! Such an interesting shape--- but boy is it good roasted!! I roast mine on my Ninja outdoor grill---cut it in steak- like slabs with olive oil and s/p --that's all!! Love your photo--there is a year round farmers market just a few blocks from my apt that I go to weekly---has such wonderful seasonal things there--apples are amazing but also has artisan breads!!! My weakness!!!

I went to two different road side stands twice this past summer. The veg and fruits were so expensive and not worth the cost.

I got a pint of plums that were mushy and I had to throw them out. $6 in the trash.

Heads of Cauliflower were $6. A dozen ears of corn was $8. Garlic was $1 for one head, cabbage $5.

Two weeks ago, on a Saturday was their last day for the season. They were given away most of what was left. They had hundreds of pumpkins for free, but I didn't bother going.

I try to grow my own produce and I get some really nice items from my neighbors. One neighbor brings me tomatoes, corn and fresh eggs....for free. Can't beat that.

This rural area has one produce stand that is open from April to mid October. No farm stands.
