Bad News for Beef

Prices are going up due to drought, price of grain and high interest rates. Ranchers have thinned herds and it will take years, when they start replenishing them, for prices to stabilize and meet demand.

I could live without meat with no problem, my husband wouldn't enjoy it though. We could make do with salmon and chicken if we had to, or lamb. I also feel for the farmers.

I won't give up beef. I can make adjustments like using ground beef more often and trimming elsewhere in my grocery purchases, if needed.

We won't give it up either. We only eat chicken and beef. Neither of us like pork (unless it's baby back ribs) or fish. We'll adjust.

@JeanLouiseFinch. The only beef I buy is ground, usually for casseroles and it was almost $7/lb for very lean. That's riduculous.

I can't even remember the last time I ate beef so rising beef prices has zero impact on my grocery bill.

I buy grassfed in 1 pound packages. I get it for around $5, unless it goes on sale for $4. I have a big freezer so I'll stock up and share with family. Waygu beef is usually expensive but it's $5 this week so I may pick up a few packages.

i made a double pot roast last night for 8 people it was over six pounds of meat and included carrots, onions, celery, and potatoes. it was roughly $6.50 a pound from sams club.

i have to say it was DELICIOUS and there was plenty for everyone to have leftovers.

not going to give up meat.

I gave up sugar stuff first of yr. Don't drink coffee.

Lucky, I can get along on salmon, chicken, turkey.

Got to have my Sprites ! not that 0 sugar stuff either

tried it threw down sink. Just drink half of one anyway.

Decaf, unsweetened tea that I add Sweet & Low too.

Brisket, I eat now and then. Pork chop sandwich.

Amarillo/cow country will be in bad shape.

Right now everything is so expensive if I waited for prices to go down we would be fighting Benny (our dog) for his food. Between Avian flu, the rising cost of feed for cows and Lord knows what else,it's a wonder we can still afford to eat!

I try to shop the sales in the grocery ads, utilize our Sam's membership and pray.❤

I visited my butcher at the local market on Saturday and bought a whole bunch of meat which included a whole New York strip steak custom cut.

I gasped when I saw the prices. I was told that beef has gone up in the last two weeks and would be going up again.

I stocked up on beef and pork. My bill was over $300, but I hope to save money in the long run. I noticed that seafood has gone up a little bit too, but at least it does go on sale.

Just stop! Beef was predicted to go up for the year 2025 last September 2024.

You can read all about it on line. The blame is due to smaller herds, etc.

Also, the price of beef always goes up in the summer months just in time for BBQ's.

I know because I buy beef in bulk. I have a couple of deep freezers.

Are Record High Beef Prices on the Horizon?

America’s families might soon see record-high beef prices at the grocery store, thanks to the lowest cattle inventory in more than 70 years. American Farm Bureau Federation economists analyzed the USDA inventory report in the latest Market Intel.

There were 87.2 million cattle and calves in the United States as of Jan. 2, 2024, 2% lower than the same time in 2023. It’s the lowest inventory since 1951. Just four years ago, there were almost 95 million cattle in the U.S.

Farmers have been driven to sell off cattle because of severe drought conditions and the rising cost of supplies needed to support their herds. There are now fewer female cattle available for breeding, which means it will take time to restock the cattle population.

“The latest cattle numbers are a stark reminder of the challenges facing America’s farmers and ranchers,” said AFBF President. “Severe weather, high inflation and geopolitical uncertainty are taking a toll on farmers across the country, and families will see the effects in their grocery bills.”

The Market Intel explains that as the cattle on feed supply begins to shrink based on fewer calves, processors will have to compete for cattle, which could lead to higher costs, especially in the second half of 2024.

Consumers could see record high beef prices toward the end of the year and into 2025..

Beef Prices Soar to Record Highs, Yet Farmers Struggle to Reap the Benefits.

USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) reported record retail beef prices for the month of July, with the all fresh value of beef estimated at $8.15 per pound (Figure 1). This marks the first time in history the national average price for all fresh beef moved above $8. Consumers across the country are asking, “Why is beef so expensive?”

The answer to this question has been several years in the making....

The U.S. cattle inventory has decreased to a seriously low level, but the market isn’t providing incentives for farmers to grow the herd again, causing beef prices to rise to record levels.

From a business standpoint it may not make a lot of sense to enter the cattle business or expand because, while the cash price for cattle is elevated, increased costs for supplies, along with market uncertainty, have become obstacles to profitability and it is uncertain whether the cattle prices two or three years out will reward this investment.
