Stealing eggs

Anybody see that Inside Edition segment on people now are stealing eggs not whole cartons, but, individual eggs and putting in pockets ?

They're now considered a valuable commodity.

People take a couple from each carton so when a paying customer buys a dozen they get home and they

have 9 or 10.

Looks like they would be scrambled by the time they got out to the car.

I always check the egg carton before I put it in my cart to make sure that there aren't any cracked eggs. I will not be short changed.

I don't worry about stolen eggs, but I do open the egg carton and look over the contents to make sure I'm not buying broken eggs. I think most people do that because broken eggs are more common than eggs completely missing.

Of course, buying eggs at all is left to chance; many locations have no eggs in stock to sell!

I learned from my mom to open and check the carton for cracked eggs before buying. Ive never failed to do so.

Where are these egg shortages? Must be regional. Not in my neck of the woods (So Joisey) which is farm country & a farmers market or stand just about on every corner.

I don't think it has to do with a shortage. It has to do with how expensive eggs have become.

I recently visited Virginia and stayed in a hotel for four days. There was a free breakfast each morning.

I noticed that there was a large bowl of hard boiled eggs already peeled on the buffett table. No one seemed to take them. The bowl was always full. There was a lot of choices.

I finally put two of them into a plastic disposable cup and took them back to my room. My dogs were happy to have an egg each morning.

After I thought about it, I was surprised no one helped themselves to all of them.

I know the price of eggs has gone up, but really, they are not that expensive that people have to steal them.

I always check the carton to make sure the eggs aren't broken before I buy. The store where I shop has a section where they sell reduced goods.

I always check there for bargains. A few times I have found cartons missing an egg or two for $2 to $3. I always pick them up.

We use a lot of eggs at my house. I also have a neighbor who gives me free eggs from his father's small farm. I always save my empty egg boxes for him. It's a good trade off.

In Michigan eggs have gotten expensive — 6.99 or higher/dozen. It may be due to the state going cage free. It’s crazy!

@lgfan. Eggs are expensive because millions of hens have been euthanized due to bird flu. Yes, this made them expensive. This happens when demand exceeds supply. Basic economics.

My Trader Joe's still has large eggs for $3.49, as opposed to $6-$13 in the other markets. But the problem is that they are only receiving a portion of what they usually get to sell. They get two deliveries a day, and if you want to snag the affordable eggs you have to be there within the first half hour of them being put out. I lucked out the other day and felt like I won the lottery!

baltimore area here.....

i have been buying them from sams club and they have a limit as to how many eggs you can buy. not even sure what the time frame is, but i buy them online to be delivered and i get an error message that i have already reached my limit.

in the grocery stores i shop in there are a lot of empty shelves where eggs usually reside. i love buying jumbo eggs, but they are often not there and when they are, they are $9+ a dozen.

Did you hear on the news last week that a large amount of eggs were stolen ... something crazy ... like $100k worth.

I was wondering how they'd get rid of them .... sell them to people from the back of their trunk? lol

In Shop-Rite,

6 eggs are 4.29

12 eggs are 7.49,

and 18 eggs are 11.19!

Actually, I wondered when that type of thing would happen--- where I live, some dirtbag stole 560 eggs from a local cafe during the night----fortunately the owner got notified and got down there to stop this jerk from stealing more--he took the eggs and some meats and even egg substitute--there was even bottles of champagne but they were left alone. But it was all caught on video.

I know it is basic economics. I was just saying that eggs were being stolen due to the cost and not the shortage.
