Did You Or Your Mother/Grandma Can Jellies, Fruits, Veggies Or Other Foods?

I have fond memories of my dear grandmother canning jelly, preserves, and peaches EVERY summer!!❤ She would make enough to give away to family and friends, and still have plenty left over!😁 I learned to make jelly that was quite good, but eventually just gave up! I had a friend who canned enough DELICIOUS tomato/pasta sauce for at least a year.😊

I cannot count the number of SCRATCHES I received while helping to pick berries.😁

Which of these, if any, did you or your family do?

I was just talking about this today with my brother. His grandmother had a farm and canned and made preserves. I mentioned her peach and plum preserves today. And how now days not to many people do those things around here. That lady could cook. Everything was from scratch.

Yes, my mom and both grandmothers canned every year. It seems as though all summer was spent breaking beans, cutting corn, peeling apples lol. If it could be frozen or canned we did it. My grandpa on my dad's side as well as my dad even preferred to help with a couple things. My dad always liked to process the tomatoes for juice and make sour kraut to be canned. This year, my dad made both raspberry and blackberry jam. He still enjoys doing a few things like this.😃❤️

Yes, my mother would buy apples. I would do the applesause and she would make pies to freeze. She also canned tomatoes.

Also, we did a lot of freezing of vegetables. Especially green beans.

A lot of good memories of her and I doing this every summer. Wish I could make pies like she did, they were the best.

@JYWilliams Welcome!🥰 When I was younger I did not fully understand how much better these things were for us! I just knew they were delicious, and a required a GREAT deal of work!😁 There is a lady here that cans apples, and cherry jelly. She is the ONLY person I know these days that does.😊

I am a from scratch baker, and my dear mother was an EXCELLENT scratch cook AND baker!❤ EVERYONE LOVED❤ her cooking. She fed anyone that stopped by.😊 I did not know to appreciate it as a child, but it gives me such a comforting memory when I think about it now!😁

My grandma did some canning and I especially remember her berries. She was the best pie maker and what I wouldn't give for a piece of her blackberry pie made with the canned berries ! 🥧

@cheriere Your grandparents sound like my dear maternal grandmother!😁 She canned EVERYTHING she could, and she and my mother had deep freezers that would be FULL by the end of the summer with everything from chickens, to okra which I NEVER developed a taste for!! Everything else she made was DELICIOUS!😋

Mostly chili sauce from a recipe in the BH&G's cookbook. She made a huge batch every year. It's wonderful on roast beef. Strangely, it has no chile in it.

The year we lived in Louisiana and had fig trees, she made lots of fig jam which is delish.

Yes. I would help my Mom can jelly, pickles and spaghetti sauce. We'd go to the fields and pick our own strawberries. I really liked her spaghetti sauce. I've been thinking about making it but it's A LOT of work.

My grandmother canned fruits and vegetables in her "summer kitchen" in the basement where it was cool. It was a 2 burner gas cooktop along with copper pots and canning jars. She had a storage room/fruit cellar/root cellar gramps built for her.

A lot of people here homestead or have real working farms so this tradition isn't a lost art.

@QVCkitty1 Welcome!🥰 I smiled as I read your post because my dear mother and grandmother canned wild blackberries, that my mother would make berry jelly to use throughout the year! She would make cobblers with the frozen berries that had the FLAKIEST, buttery crust! Everyone LOVED❤ them!😁 I wish she had written down exactly how she made her cobblers, because those memories are long gone.😊

We always can in our basement kitchen too. It sure does cut down on heating up the whole house so much, not to mention the mess lol. There's a big area set up for nothing but this in the summer. I understand just what you're talking about. We canned some chow chow I've been meaning to put up a recipe for and forgot lol.😃❤️

@on the bay Welcome!🥰 Funny you should mention jam, because that is the ONE thing that I think they made once or twice only! I am smiling as I think of berry jelly on hot buttered biscuits! Sometimes the butter had the refrigerator taste, but we did not care because they were still GOOD!❤
