Italian Cookies

I'm not sure where to put this, why isn't there a "food" category in the forums? I've recently been watching lots of food shows with Lidia Bastianich, my favorite chef at this time, and she was visiting places where ladies would make Italian cookies in honor of St Joseph as a fund raiser for the needy. Does anyone have a tried and true source for purchasing authentic Italian cookies online?

We Italians make many kinds of cookies. Could you be a little more descriptive? I have been to weddings where the "cookie table" will have at least a dozen or more DIFFERENT kinds of cookies.

@Carolina925 Try GOLDBELLY. I've never ordered Italian Cookies from them, but I have ordered several things and they are wonderful. They offer items from around the country that get shipped directly to your door. If there is an issue, you can work directly with them and they will make it right. At least check them out and see who is featured. They also have revliews posted. Then you can go directly to the producer, and see if they offer something similar or better.

Growing up there were so many wonderful neighborhood Italian bakeries. The cookies were amazing. Good luck in your search.

@Group 5 minus 1, We are fortunate to have some excellent Italian bakeries here in CT. We always order a platter of cookies especially for Christmas. Going there, looking at their huge bakery display of goods, just makes my mouth water.

You may want to check out Termini Brothers Bakery in Philadelphia.

They have been there forever and their cookies are delicious.

They have a FB page and they have a website for ordering.

Bonus... everyone knows Italian cookies have no calories!

@Group 5 minus 1 , I don't know anything about the different kinds, just was interested to see that there are so many that look so good. I was hoping for an online source that sells an assortment. Thanks for your response.

The typical Italian St Joseph "treat" is a pastry called "zeppola" (plural is "zeppole") They look like this:

The fillings are generally vanilla, chocolate or ricotta.

If there is a St Joseph cookie (as you mentioned), I don't know what it is.

@faeriemoon , gosh that looks wonderful! I guess I wasn't really clear. Lidia visited places across the states that celebrated St Joseph by baking all kinds of Italian cookies, not any specific one. I discovered that my knowledge of Italian food was very small, delegated mainly to pasta dishes. Yes, I've lived a very sheltered life.

It is very popular at that time in NYC bakeries.

It is not shown on this website but they definitely make it at that time.

A wonderful Christmas cookie is cuccidata, a delicate fig cookie dressed up for the holiday with sprinkles.

@faeriemoon Do you know this one? It's delicious. I have often mentioned it on these threads.

@KBEANS , thanks for that information! My mother-in-law used to work in a bakery in Brooklyn and would bring cannoli home sometimes, first time this southern girl even knew there was such a thing! Sweet memories of her, thank you! I'll be checking out this bakery.

If you’ve never had Italian pastries or cookies, be ready.

Authentic Italian baked goods are not as sweet as the American pastries and cookies.

They are a very different experience. The cannoli are the sweetest, because of the amount of powdered sugar.

I love Lidia as well and follow her on all socials. I live in NYC, but here are my suggestions for the best Italian baked goods. I didn't see Lidia's St Joseph's Day episode, but my Sicilian family always had cuccidati for St Joseph's and Christmas. They're fig cookies and delicious.

The best online ordering for Italian baked goods is either Villabate Alba or Circo's. They're both located in Brooklyn and have fantastic cookies, pastries, etc. I usually get my sfingi (St Joseph's with cannoli cream instead of custard) and Cannoli from one of these. No issues with receiving them on time or in perfect shape when I sent them to people.

(I'd stay away from gold belly to be honest. I've sent things to many people from them and they were good for a while, but the quality has suffered. I learned that the vendors now ship their items to a central location where they are frozen and then sent out at a later time. I sent something ahead recently and I couldn't believe how mushy it was when I got to the person's house).

@Tori3569 , the fig cookies caught my attention straight away, they looked wonderful. Thanks for the suggestions. I ordered from goldbelly some Portuguese Pastel de Nata, a custard tart. They were good but their shipping was really high. Seems the shipping from the individual bakeries isn't so bad and lots offer free shipping over a certain amount. Thank you!

Great! FYI, when I have ordered from goldbelly, I sort by free shipping. There are usually many options with free shipping.
