My aunt brought this recipe for Easter brunch. She used various fresh fruits, but the dressing and coconut were always the same:

5 tbsp powdered sugar

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 cups toasted sweetened coconut

Toss fruit with 2 tbsp sugar and let drain in colander for 1/2 hour.

Whisk cream, sour cream, 3 tbsp sugar, and vanilla in bowl using electric mixer on low until foamy. Then whip on high to form stiff peaks.

Fold in fruit and coconut.

.

She would peel the orange and remove the white stuff ( can't remember the correct name - now)and section the orange and cut in smaller pieces. She would squeeze all the juice out. Then add coconut. If the oranges were really sweet and juicy - no sugar added. Her original recipe included a small can of crushed pineapple drained and adding chopped pecans but we preferred just the orange and coconut.

@SouthernBee That's it!

@SouthernBee : My mother also made it this way, no marshmallows in is either but lots of pecans. I loved it!!

Some version of it was always served at Stanley Home Products parties in the 60's, and I think Mom made every version for us. My brother and I preferred jello salads to ambrosia.

I have never tasted it, but have seen it served at picnics. It never appealed to me.

Thankfully, my mother never ruined a good fruit salad with marshmallow and sour cream.
