I've been having oatmeal most mornings and I prepare it on the stovetop, using whole milk. The only thing I add to it is dried blueberries or raisins.

I was talking to a friend recently and she questioned my use of whole milk. She uses instant oatmeal and water. She also adds brown sugar and nuts.

I'm thinking while the whole milk sustains me throughout the day, sugar would cause me to crash mid-morning.

It leaves me wondering how others prepare their oatmeal. If you don't mind sharing I'm curious to know.

Instant oatmeal and water in the microwave. It cooks in 90 seconds and when it is done, I add a handful of fresh organic blueberries, a dollop of sugar free jelly (Skinny Girl brand) and maybe some cinnamon.

I use fresh plain oats ( unprocessed) and add some skim milk with some of 1/2 & 1/2, to add a rich texture. Honestly, I put it together in a micro container at night, and micro for 2 min, then throw in the fridge- Next day it's perfect! When I eat it, I add whatever I have, bananas, berries, dried cranberries, and maple syrup! Yum!

I have it a few different ways, but always with water, not milk.

Sometimes I have it plain, just a pinch of salt makes that less bland. Sometimes I just want bland.

When I want a little flavor or tad sweet, I add raisins or berries, and cinnamon, and sometimes a tad of maple syrup, and pecans too.

This isn't that often but, I've also been known to make a savory type...don't cringe...with a little chicken broth, and spinach or mushrooms...makes like a veggie porrage, which I like, and I tend to like savory in the morning sometimes more than sweet. I know THAT is weird to most people, but it's good. I can feel everyone cringing right now. Haha.🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

I don't usually have oatmeal. It's a bit too high in carbs for me. However the way I've been eating lately it doesn't matter but I plan to return to low carb eating after the holidays.

If I were to make it I think the way you do with whole milk sounds the most filling and more likely to sustain my appetite for many hours. Adding sugar like your friend does sounds tasty but will just make you hungrier faster!

My daughter makes oatmeal most days and she uses plant based milk and fruit like blueberries.

I use the regular oats and make a serving for one in the microwave (1/2 cup oats, 1 cup water, microwave 3 minutes.) I usually eat it plain, but will slice a banana to put into it. I use it to help control acid. I no longer eat instant oatmeal. I fear it could have something that would trigger my acid reflux.

As a kid I'd often have tuna salad before school. My mom thought it was nuts but I felt better all day. Just yesterday I was wondering what I could put in it to make it savory. I think I'll give your idea a try soon, likely on a day when I don't have breakfast until noon.

@jlkz

Yes, I agree that dried fruit has sugar. I'm careful to buy organic dried blueberries that have nothing added. Of course the fruit has its own sugar, but it doesn't seem to bother me.

If anyone is interested, I buy these regularly from A-zon. They are quite pricey at $14/lb but they last me a long time and I feel comfortable sharing them with my 2 year old granddaughter. In fact, I bought her a bag of these as one of her Christmas gifts and I know she's going to love it.

Old-fashioned or thick cut rolled oats in a jumbocup, water to cover, microwave 60 seconds no more. I don't want the oats cooked enough to be slimy. Add water, a drop of flax oil (honestly it is like butter only better for you) a couple tsps of maple syrup and salt or not salt depends, and a splash of non fat milk.
