I use so little liquid oil these days. Just last night I decided to cook up sone pot stickers and it called for 3 Tbs in a pan. I didn't measure and I'm sure I didn't use 3 Tbs, but it really smelled and smelled up the kitchen. I think it had turned rancid. This was canola oil. I usually use either olive oil or avocado oil. Not sure why I didn't grab one of those. Usually, there's not enough left in the pan to pour out.

If you add baking soda to oil and stir it a bit, a thick paste will form that is very easy to discard with your regular trash. I don't know the price of the products mentioned here, but baking soda is cheeeap.

I rarely even use oil and then it's usually for a stir fry and it's a tablespoon or so...you can also use an ice cube or bunch of ice in a paper towel and swirl it over the oil...but when it is warm, not hot...or the baking soda or even cornstarch. I am glad the maker got the backing on Shark Tank to bring it to market, but can't imagine there would be a big market for it. I wish them luck and hope they make a fortune.

Cooking oil is very recyclable. It can be refined and reused as a fuel source. Here in NJ, it's to be treated as a hazardous waste and can be turned in at one of the hazardous waste disposal days for recycling.

To quote the NJ DEP: "Still, many New Jersey residents do not realize that disposing of used oil by pouring it down the drain or in the back yard, or even putting it out with the trash, or using it for dust suppression, is illegal, under the regulations at N.J.A.C. 7:26A-6, and can cause environmental damage."

They apply the same rules to cooking oil, automotive oil, and any other oil product. Restaurants typically have contracts with used cooking oil collectors and recyclers. Homeowners and home cooks are supposed to take the oil to a hazardous waste collection day and dispose of it there. I keep an old empty oil container for my used cooking oil and then turn it in at one of my county's hazardous waste collection days. I typically end up with a gallon or two of used oil each time.

I use a double sheet of paper towel to soak up grease, especially from bacon---of course I wait til the pan is at room temp and then lay the paper towel over the grease, tap it all over into the stuff-- let it get cold and then pull it up and toss it away.

A needless product, IMO.

Bacon grease is saved and used in this house.

Other grease doesn't get saved. I'll collect it, chill or freeze it, and put it in the trash.
