Shower caps in the kitchen? Whaaaat?

I'm not sure if this was my own idea or if someone previously posted it, but it's worth repeating.

I purchase shower caps at the Dollar Tree. They are 8 for $1.25 and I use them to cover bowls or plates that don't need to be airtight. I especially like them when I'm proofing dough. Most times they aren't contaminated in any way and I can reuse them several times.

The bowl pictured is quite small, but they stretch far enough to cover all of my largest bowls, plates and vessels.

I also use these when cooking. This last year, I have been losing my hair by the handful. Just tying it back is not enough. Don't ask me how I know. Lol. These are the only way I can be sure a stray hair doesn't end up in the food.

Good for you! Nothing grosses me out like hair in the kitchen. A pet peeve of mine is when the TV chefs or cooking show hosts have their hair hanging down.

Thanks ! NOTHING bothers me more than chefs and contestants have hair hanging everywhere.....it is so unsanitary and gag worthy.

@loriqvc I've been using these for years but a different Brand. I like the different sizes. They beat covering the items with aluminum foil and they are also air thight because there is a size for each container, plate, bowl, mugs and so on and so on.

I still have a few left but will check Dollar Tree.

I would not use regular shower caps to cover anything that contains food.

@Nightowlz I don't think so. Those for food have been around forever and they are very affordable.

This idea reminds me of something my grandmother used to use. She had these small, round plastic covers with elastics over bowls in the refrigerator. They were definitely made for just that purpose but I don't recall my mother having them so they must have been replaced by aluminum foil and rolls of plastic wrap fairly soon afterwards. I think they were already old when my grandmother was using them (she never threw anything out.) What goes around comes around.

You can get elasticized fabric covers with water-resistant linings on Amazon or some of the sites that sell "homemade items" and they seem like they'd be great for multiple uses since you can wash them—but after briefly trying a set, I decided that style/approach was not for me. They're nice if you want to temporarily leave a bowl on your counter or go to a potluck (especially for dry items) but I preferred the simple plastic covers.

@loriqvc I prefer using the plastic covers.

Just use it and dump it.

@Desertdi if you live alone that's ok but when you have different people going into the refridgerator there goes the plate lol.

I live alone but would not use a plate. The plastic covers look so much better and sometimes you don't even realize that it's covered unless you see the elastic on the sides.

Another use for the shower caps/food covers is for when you inadvertently burn the toast or overcook the popcorn thus setting off the smoke alarm. I pop one over to silence the alarm until the smoke dissipates.
