Given what's going on with the closures of other stores, Wegman is either delusional, or has worked a side deal with the looting mobs to stay away. Good luck.

There is absolutely nothing comparable in Manhattan.

Due to space constraints even the largest Manhattan grocery store is many times smaller than those in the suburbs.

Wegmans was very wise to wait for the right space to become available: this was the former home of a Kmart.

I suspect it will be very, very successful.

(Can't quite figure out what Wegmans has to do with "looting mobs". Anyone have insight or clarification?)

I might try to visit tomorrow, if the crowds have lessened.

My daughter works for Wegmans in NJ. A few of the managers where she works have transfered to the new Manhattan store for supervisory positions. One of the managers that transferred is a close friend of my daughter, and said the grand opening yesterday was a huge success. There's also another Wegmans located in Brooklyn which opened in 2019.

If you've never been to Wegmans, it's true. "It's not just a grocery store, it's an experience." I'm sure this store will be a huge success as are all their other stores.

This is the landmarked Wannamaker's Building at Astor Place which houses the new Wegmans.

The building is also home to offices for Yahoo and Meta. I bet their employees will make great use of the prepared food areas.

The building has one of the highest property tax bills in the City: over $20 million annually.

Probably a smart move, and I wish it were closer to me. For a very long time, New Yorkers had little choice in supermarkets; just a few major chains were represented. A Trader Joe's opened near me last year (I think); it wasn't the first TJ in Manhattan either. But I was told that it has the highest sales per square foot of any Trader Joe's in the country. They had to add additional checkout stations before the first year was out. I wouldn't be surprised if Wegman's had similar success.

We have a Wegmans opening near me this coming winter. It's in a new shopping center and the building with the store name is up already. They have sent out postcards to area residents about job opportunities last week.

I am looking forward to the store being close now. No more having to drive over half an hour!

One Wegmans here in MD is probably one of the largest Wegmans there is or it may be the largest, I was in there once and never again, way too overwhelming. But the one in my area is just the right size, much smaller. Outstanding in every way, great selection and prices are quite good, here their prices are on par with Walmart.

In a country of 340 million people, apparently a handful of large retail stores have been victims of organized criminal attacks...where looters get away with smash and grabs...

Some have used that as a pretext to close stores....

In Manhattan, they'll probably have an NYPD substation nearby to prevent that....so it's unlikely...

Another overblown story on ...I think..The Cartoon Network? Of some such media outlet where the talking heads have admitted they are "entertainers" first.....

It's like those memes that take hold that most residents of non-coastal states live in run own house trailers and have no teeth...

Not true, but easy to blow out of proportion to support a personal theory....

Spectacular!

I went to visit 2 days ago to check it out, walk around and get the lay of the land. The first floor is unbelievable for those of us with nothing similar!

This part of Manhattan has never had anything comparable! And it's twice the size of Manhattan's largest Whole Foods.

I went back today and bought a few things. It was incredibly crowded, but with attentive staff the self checkout was seamless and I waited under 3 minutes.

Impressive. I will surely revisit several times a week, if not more often.

I've been three times so far. Love it!

Always use the self checkouts which are plentiful and a marvel of modern technology.

Staff is extremely plentiful and attentive, if needed.

If you never been to Wegmans,yes,it. Is an experience.My Wegmans is here in Central New Jersey and I was just there.yesterday to get a prescription for a family member.

There are chain supermarkets and there is Wegmans. When it first opened in our area the prices were steep but gradually it seemed to settle in and become comparable if not better priced than other markets. The quality is excellent!

@Cats3000 You're right. Rochester, NY is where Wegmans began, and remains their home base, and we've seen it all. I can assure you that Wegmans would have no problem closing that store if a problem such as you described became an issue; they've done it before.

In fact, Wegmans has closed all of its stores within city limits, with one notable exception: the upscale East Ave. store-- located down the street from the George Eastman House.

I don't know about this newest Manhattan location, but I'm guessing they've checked it out thoroughly. Wegmans would sooner embrace the possessive apostrophe lol (never done) than allow an even underperforming, much less crime-ridden, store to remain open.
