Do You Use Butter?

For several years now, the only time I've used butter is when I bake cookies and at holiday time (in turkey stuffing, etc.) I haven't used margarine in years either. If I have a sandwich, it's sans butter. I figure it's one way I've cut back on calories & cholesterol.

But, I bought some English muffins last week & bought a tub of whipped butter to use on them. Eating a toasted English muffin with butter was like heaven.

Before my BFF passed in 2019, we used to go to a favorite Italian restaurant. The bread with real butter was like a savory dessert to me.

Do you use butter?

Yes, I keep some in a butter keeper on my kitchen counter so I have soft butter available. It's all I use. It's not like I eat butter on a daily basis though, but if a recipe calls for butter or margarine, butter is what I use.

No. I don't bake. We use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Works for us.

Yes, I use butter in stick form and soft. I use Crisco in my chocolate chip cookies. They are thicker and chewier. I do not enjoy, crisp or brown cookies.

Yes, of course I use butter. Had some on a baked potato last night. Haven't used margarine in years and years. You mentioned on a sandwich but I never do that...maybe on a grilled cheese? But I've probably only had half a dozen of those in my lifetime. Sandwiches call for mayo or mustard. Oh, and as far as English muffins, I do eat butter on those...peanut butter!

Yes, I use real butter. I don't like margarines or "tastes like butter" substitutes with all their added ingredients.

If I think it's a problem, I can always cut down but, for me, nothing beats the taste of real butter.

I only use butter... I can tell margarine the minute I taste something and it's such a turnoff. Ruins what I'm eating ... especially a good baked potato, pancakes or lobster !! I am 74 years old and I enjoy good food. If not now, then when ??

Yes I use butter but I try to limit my use. I buy a tub of spreadable butter and it lasts a long time. Handy for grilled cheese. Corn on the cob needs just a little bit. Margarine is OK for baking but I don't do that anymore.

Like @Icegoddess, I always have a little pot of softened butter on the counter all ready to go, mostly because I have regular phases where I really love having toast or cinnamon toast as a late evening snack. And I agree with you, @Desert Lily—good bread with a little smear of good butter is simply heavenly.

I stopped using margarine three years ago and switched to only butter since I was primarily baking with it or using it for toast or other applications where flavor mattered. Before that, I'd used margarine instead of butter in many recipes or in cases where a boxed product called for it to eliminate some fat when it didn't seem quite as necessary (though I still almost always used butter when baking). I'd definitely become used to it since we had far more margarine than butter when I was growing up due to the cost and the fact that my father preferred it to butter (and still does, crazily enough). Even though butter is definitely more expensive, I have found it to be worth the money, and it freezes very nicely so I can stock up when it's on sale.

Yes. I use and love using butter. I use it to cook eggs, and I use it on rice and also on noodles and on baked potatoes. Sometimes, I sauté garlic and vegetables in butter, too. I use unsalted butter, and add salt as needed to control the amount. I do not use margarine.

And yes, @Desert Lily - eating warm bread at an Italian restaurant is like eating a desert or a delicacy for me, especially as I do not typically eat bread or purchase bread.

Sometimes. When I'm in Shoprite, I buy their substitute spread made from vegetable oil. Very good and only $1.19 for a fairly large container.

@loriqvc I grew up on margarine too. My mom was quite the penny pincher. Oh, and Miracle Whip, blech! But, every so often when we visited my grandparents we got real butter from the churn. Fresh milk from the cow too. I have to say, the butter at the grocery store, while better than margarine, is not as flavorful as churned from the cow butter. I think the pasteurization has something to do with it.

Same here! Love those butter keepers. I have them in two colors, one for regular and one for unsalted.
