Bread Saver

Can anyone suggest a bread saver for bread made in a Zojirushi bread machine. The loaf is larger than most savers. Have been using a plastic bag but a unsliced loaf will not fit. Most times the height of the loaf is 6 to 7".

I never had luck saving homemade bread. It was either gone that day or put in the fridge wrapped in foil for the next day's toast. It goes bad very quickly so I never searched for a bread keeper. I hope you find what you're looking for.

If you're interested in a plastic bag that's big enough, check out Hefty Slider Jumbo Storage Bags on amazon. They are 2.5 gallon size. We use them to freeze our already-wrapped loaves.

I also have a Zojirushi bread maker and I have found the Debbie Meyer green bags great for keeping the bread fresh. It's important to not put the bread into a bag until it is fully cooled, or it will go moldy faster. Also, I generally slice the bread, put it into a bag with a twist tie, and keep it in the freezer, just pulling out slices as I need them. Hope this helps!

I got a LocknLock container, but, as someone else said, homemade bread goes bad quickly. I can get a few days out of a new loaf though at room temp. I add a little ginger to mine as a preservative. The L&L I got on Amazon and there were several different sizes available, so you might see if one fits your needs.

For in the freezer storage, I got bread bags.

@kismet - I agree that LocknLock has some great options; you could also try this one available on Amazon: B000KHRXA8 (the product title includes "LocknLock Easy Essentials Rectangle 16.5 Cup" and, oddly enough, "for beans"). Good luck!

I did see the 2.5 gallon bags online. Just thought I'd get something nice to put on the counter. I did check out the lock and lock and I have a lot of the items but they seem to be harder to open as I get older. Maybe I'll try the 2.5 gallon bags. I don't cut the bread until I use it and keep what I don't use in the freezer and give it to the birds or squirrels. I can say that I have never had my machine make a bad loaf of bread and it's so easy to make.

Icegoddess, I did check out the Grin bags and they may work especially for freezing. Do you use a slicer with the different thickness spaces. I use what I bought on QVC years ago, it's flat with a plastic slideout to adjust the thickness. Was looking at one on A that can adjust and hold the whole loaf.

I use the Debbie Meyer green boxes to store bread in.

DH usually makes a loaf each week. It's gone before it can get moldy.

Just made some peanut butter so we are eating pb toast for breakfast.

DH just made a loaf of buttermilk bread. He cuts it with an electric knife.

DH always rolls out the dough to make a regular size loaf of bread. We don't like the shape the bread machine makes. He uses a USA 13x4 pullman pan with lid.

We split the loaf and wrap half of it in plastic wrap and put in a bag for the freezer. I just ordered the Debbie Meyer Bread Bags at HSN. Looking forward to trying them.

@kismet I'm with @Nightowlz. I have these (Debbie Meyer's) a really long time and they are really good and look and perform as they did when I first bought them on HSN. I bought a 2 pack.

I did check out the DM bread box but the height of the box is too short. I do have an old Rubbermaid from years ago that is 7 1/4 x7 1/4x10 1/2. Can't remember if it worked well but will try it.

If you don't like the larger Zojirushi bread machine loaves, cut off part of the bottom or the top and cut that part like breadsticks. They are great for snacking or toasting.

Then you have a shorter loaf. I like to cut off the whole top so the remaining loaf is better for smaller sandwich sized slices.

I don't bake bread but the supermarket bread is molding pretty quick in this humidity. Considering buying a bread keeper. The fridge helps but it dries the bread out.

@kismet - Can you freeze it? I know you're not supposed to refrigerate bread. This summer DH and I are not eating much of the multigrain bread we love, so I started freezing it. I put it in the microwave on defrost a few seconds and it's delicious!

Yes I can freeze it. I freeze bread all the time from the grocery store and have frozen the home made. Just wanted something to keep it on the counter.

Didn't want to cut the top off since half a slice is more than enough for a sandwich. Everyone seems to want the larger slices. I love this bread machine.

@kismet , sorry, I didn't get the notification that you tagged me. Yes, I have one of the slicers with the varrying thicknesses. it's bamboo I think and comes with a nice knife although I like my Pampered Chef bread knife better because it's longer. I still have trouble getting it right though.
