Can opener not working!

I have 2 can openers, an auto electric, which I love and a Ruhn Rikon for when it isn't available.

The last 2 cans I opened do not have enough of the "crimping" stuff used for the can opener to catch on to to work. Neither one would work!

Suggestion for a different can opener or other suggestions to be able to use canned food!

Do you have one of the really old ones with the sharp point to puncture the edge of the top lid then you pump up and down to work your way around the lid. This is the opener that leaves a very jagged edge on the can.

@Zhills I've never come across a can that the Kuhn Rikon couldn't open. Is there a way you could provide a picture of the can or a similar can?

No, but I've used one of those. I opened these with a Church key! Not advised! Dangerous!

Is this everyone's problem?

@PA Mom-mom The cans were thrown away. One was Cream corn and a major brand!

The other was Quail eggs from Thailand. Maybe that is the reason? Didn't have a problem with the 1st one!

I have a Ruhn Rikon that has to be 30+ years old. Can not find an example of it. The closest I found was another brand but the same concept as my can opener. My can opener is still going strong.

Never tried an eletric one. I saw how many my Mom went through and decided it wasn't worth it.

Here is a picture of a similar model as my Ruhn Rikon.

I use the manual Rikon and have never had a can that I couldn't open. I don't use an electric opener.

My can opener rarely gives me an issue. On hard cans I push up on the bottom of the can when rotating.

I have a Hamilton Beach electric can opener that cuts the top off without leaving the jagged edge. I don't know how to describe it but I have had it about 15 years. When it dies, I plan to get another of the same type if I can find it.

I hate the manual can openers. They are too hard on my hands.

@PA Mom-mom That's the can opener I have! Couldn't get it to grasp the can!

I had Roland Quail Eggs. Opened one can with no problem.

I've had this happen before but seldom!!!! Usually on little square type cans.

Can openers were never a problem. One always worked!

OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener cuts below the metal lid. Two little pinchers lift the lid off completely. No sharp edges. It gets my highest recommendation.

I have that Kuhn Rikon opener too and it opens cans of spam when the pull ring comes off and opens corned beef cans when the twist key breaks off or is missing.

I have the same Kuhn Rikon opener and sometimes I need to go around twice to get the can to open.

And I have had a few cans that are just stuck together so hard that I need pliers to pull the top off after going around with the opener. I'm not sure that's the fault of the opener though.

So happy to know I'm not the only one. My favorite was a bunny opener. Not sure if it was a Kuhn Rikon but bought at the Q long ago. It was a rachet type. When that one died, I bought a similar one, the Q still sells it. Sometimes it cuts halfway into the crimp and stops. I bought another battery operated one from Amazon. I like it. Sometimes I still have to use both to open a can. Pull tabs are hard for me so the battery one wins for that. I stick to frozen veggies. Much easier to cut the bag open.

After going through many can openers , that didn't work , l got a Kitchen Mamma from Amazon , best thing l ever bought ! lt goes around the top by itself , cuts the lid off with no sharp edges , l love it ! l can't use manual openers .

Is there something different in cans these days? I bought a new can opener and it worked less than 10 times and I had to toss. The can opener would not grab the can properly on the edge so you could turn the handle and have the cutting work. I bought another one at Walmart and thank goodness that one works. I prefer the tab opening cans but not all have that adapted design. I just assumed cnas are not the same as they were a decade ago.

I purchased the Hamilton Beach also @Qgirl26 . I purchased at Walmart at least 5 years ago and love it.I have the Kuhn Rikon (SP?) manual one also ,but do not use it much.
