This is the recipe I follow, except I toss my meat in a Ziploc bag of flour and saute in olive oil before stewing in the slow cooker with the rest of the ingredients. I like a lttle texture on the outside of the meat when serving.

You are referring to uncooked potatoes being stored in the refrigerator turning to sugar. Once cooked and stored in the refrigerator, potatoes actually have a lower glycemic index and actually lower in sugar than when your stew is freshly made and hot.

There is no need to make your potatoes separately. Actually, if you are concerned about potatoes effect on blood sugar, make the stew and refrigerate it. The outcome will be about a 25% reduction in sugar and advantageous for anyone with diabetes. More than 50 + years of cooking and controlling Type 1 diabetes, I was taught that when first diagnosed.🙂

I too was curious about the stew, though. It looks almost more like a soup and with only the broth, meat, onions and mushrooms, there would appear to be nothing to give it the body or consistency of a stew. We're all different, but this probably wouldn't appeal to me. I do agree, some vegetables don't freeze or refrigerate well, and their texture surely changes, but when I think of stew I do think of a thicker consistency with vegetables.

This is stew to me - a rich thick broth with chunks of meat and vegetables. What the OP posted looks like watery soup.

For those that think @ECBG 's stew appears watery. There is a very simple solution. Add the potatoes while cooking. They will naturally thicken the liquid because of the starch content. Otherwise, your stew will resemble a soup and you will need a bowl instead of a dinner plate.

I received a slow cooker today that I ordered earlier this week. I wanted to make beef stew .

When I got married in the 1980's, we received several slow cookers for wedding gifts. Back then, I never thought I'd miss one if I didn't have one. I'm glad I have one again.

@Desert Lily

Enjoying that slow cooker?

I am going to be doing a 9 lb turkey breast for 5 hrs. on low on Thanksgiving. (I have the big oval crock. The back has to be cut out-I put it on the side-so the lid will fit).

After I rub with melted butter, I use quite a lot of poultry seasoning, marjoram, thyme, and celery seed. I remove the skin since it doesn't brown.

I can send some home and have extra for sandwiches.

I can't stand deli turkey. It tastes like paper to me.
