Do you leave your dining table set when you're not hosting?

I enjoyed Alberti and Tara on the Temptations show this afternoon, but something they said got me thinking. They suggested leaving your dining room table set at all times to make your home more welcoming. Well, I don't have a formal dining room, but even if I did I think that would be a no-go for me.

Does anyone really do that?

No, I don't set the table when I'm not having company. I do keep the table and chairs well-polished, as well as the sideboard. I have a white eyelet runner on the table and candle sticks at either end. It looks cared for and pretty, but not set for eating.

Good point. I hadn't even thought of that. My two cats never go on tables or counters, but try as I might there is always hair blowing here and there.

I think it is another sales ploy. They were planting the seed, so people will buy these table settings. I have never been in a home that had a table set for decorating purposes. It makes no sense at all.

@house_cat- I know two people who do this, placemates, place settings, cloth napkins, silverware and glassware.

I don't get it but I don't said anything.

My friend's aunt has her dining room table set with place cards on the plates with all the people she would like to have as guests. Can't remember them but some place cards were for Brad Pitt, Mick Jagger, Obama, her favorite authors, etc. I'm told she sometimes changes the place cards according to her changing tastes. She's a funny lady.

@house_cat We have a bowl and two candlesticks (Luminara); and DH insisted we place some jacquard (early American coverlet-style) placemats. I prefer a bare table with candlesticks.

I knew a woman that had a fully set table in the 1970's!!!!

We eat in the dining room; I don't like eating in the kitchen over linoleum, and it's uncomfortable for an adult.

The kitchen table was perfect for our son's breakfast and homework.

I think my dining room is welcoming enough without keeping the table set for dinner guests. Of course, we all do what makes us happy in our own homes.

No, I used to when all the family was still home. That was long ago so no it makes no sense. I keep it decorated nicely usually by season or tradition, birthday, etc.

No, they'll suggest/say anything to sell, sell, sell - besides minimalistic is the trend, who needs more to dust, etc. I do like having an attractive centerpiece on the table.

Funny that this came up.

I've been watching youtube videos of deserted mansions and castles by a person named BigBankz. He's an urban explorer and this castle had the table still set with china. And yes, this activity is considered trespassing.

I think dusting and cleaning would be a pain & I would not find it practical for how we live and use the room.

I just keep a crystal vase filled with fresh flowers on the table. It's cheery and easy to remove when I am dusting the room.

I always have a table cloth on the dining room table to fit the season. I also have a center piece that I decorate according to the season. I don't agree setting the dining room table is welcoming, my home is welcoming because I am here, LOL!!!!!!

I love to eat at my formal dining table, but I would never feel comfortable using dishes, silverware and glassware that had been sitting out. My home is clean, but the HVAC is on 24/7 and who knows what kind of air it's been blowing over the dining table? NOPE. Would never consider such a thing. Plus, it's ugly looking at tableware all day.

My furniture is gorgeous with a simple crystal vase filled with fresh flowers every few days. It's my home and decorated how I like it when I sit down to enjoy a meal or when I walk by and enjoy a whiff of fresh scent!
