How Have Strawberries Been In..............

your area? We normally get Driscolls berries but DD said they haven't looked all that good when she got groceries the last few weeks.

Friday she came home with another brand from Weis. 3 good size containers for $10.

We will make shortcake biscuits later today. First strawberry shortcake of the season. I like to put sliced berries in yogurt too.

How are your berries and what is your favorite way to use them?

Farm grown are ridiculously priced, I have been getting them at the market 3 qts @ $10. Those are huge and great taste. I put them in my breakfast mix of yogurt and cereal ... or eat them plain.

@rms1954 There is a farm that has pick your own strawberries about 15 miles from here. I just checked their website. No baskets of pre picked berries. Pick your own $2.15 per pound.

Me getting down to pick berries is not an option, plus the same town where this farm is also has a rattlesnake roundup every year. I'm sure picking is safe but, nope, I'll go to the grocery store. lol

We bought Welch's from Ca from our grocery store abt a week ago that were okay. My area now has freash local berries , haven't bought as yet so don't know the price .

We used to have places where you could pick your own yrs ago .

I tend to prefer California produce and that also applies to the strawberries. I haven't seen the Driscolls yet, I don't think, but definitely not the California Driscolls (the best ones!).

The strawberries I saw at the store last week didn't look so good. It seems like in the last several years I don't see as many quality strawberries in the stores.

Hopefully, the CA Driscolls will be out soon and good this year.

I haven't had strawberries yet this year. Locally-grown berries (SE PA) are ridiculously expensive, $8.99 per quart. It's not much better - and maybe worse - at the u-pick places. I'll have to get Driscolls (CA-grown) at the supermarket.

Funny you should mention this. I bought Driscoll's strawberries yesterday for $2.50 and they were the sweetest ever-I just about finished the pound container in one sitting. It's been a long time since I've had any that good. (I'm in NC)

Lots of wonderful strawberries are grown around Stilwell Oklahoma, but not having access to those, I take what I can get. I like them in cereal or yogurt, or to stand over the sink and eat them.

I've been getting great strawberries at Aldi's, and the price hasn't been bad, IMO. A local grower has a stand not far from us and they're selling the buckets for $25! They're great, but too many for us to use unless I freeze them or make jam.

Rarely buy Driscolls - haven't checked local l farmers yet - but did buy the big pkg at Wegmans day ago. Big red and beautiful but, as usual, they were hard as garden stones w/lots of white interior. Cut them up + sugar but that wasn't enough help....still stones - no juice. So...

This AM I put them in the string manual chopper and reduced them down to small chop & saw some juice. See what Sunday brings............

@fthunt My berries are in the colander now draining from being washed. I will be cutting them up shortly, hoping for nice juicy berries but who knows. I'm on berry duty and DD will make te biscuits.

When we lived in Arkansas, they ate slightly unripe strawberries sprinkled with salt!

Very tasty!

I eat salt on unripe watermelon, why not strawberries!

of Driscoll's Organic Strawberries from California. They are

excellent, nice and red and not white in the center. $6.99 per box

Sometimes I slice them and sprinkle a little sugar on top.

Those I use to top vanilla ice cream or for strawberry shortcake.

This week I cut some up to add to plain or vanilla yogurt.

I will also make cream cheese and strawberry sandwiches.

These are served at a nearby Tea House and I have been making them at home.

I use Pepperidge Farm white sandwich bread and spread it with whipped cream cheese. Then I slice the strawberries about an eighth of an inch thick and place those on top of cream cheese. I top that with another slice of bread. For myself, I just

cut the sandwich into quarters. It is very good with hot or iced tea for lunch.

When I have a tea party for my girls, I trim the crust before serving along with other tea sandwiches and pastries.

Yum! We don't f have that store but I got some at Food Lion. They also have pine berries right now too.

Our local market buys from places in NC. Strawberries have been pretty, but a basket was $6 and $36 for a flat. I don't eat berries but saw quite a few people looking at them trying to decide if they were worth it.

Up until about three weeks ago I was able to find strawberries at our farmers market (they are gone for this year) for $16 per gallon container. They were okay. I have definitely had better tasting berries in the past.

Here is SE PA I have been getting Driscolls from Shop Rite and from Giant and they have been good. I am headed to Aldi tomorrow as they have the California strawberries listed on sale for $1.69! Blackberries are on sale for $2.50 at Shop Rite this week, so if I cannot get a better price at Aldi, I will go there for the Blackberries (stores are across the street from each other).
